cpu upgrade

Just trying to upgrade CPU from core i3-6100 to i7-8700. Computer do not start. When switch on cooler rotates few times and goes on stby. Any advice?

i don't know your board but most just accept two cpu generation , no more. ex: mine do 6Th and 7th, di you look at the specifications ?

i7-8700 requires a 300 series motherboard. An H170 won't work. Buy the i7-7700k and upgrade your ROM to support it or buy a 300 series motherboard.

Of course it does not work. The Core i7 8700 is not compatible with 100 or 200 series motherboards like your H170 board.

If you still want to upgrade the CPU, you have the following options :
(1) Return or sell the i7 8700 and get a i7 7700 or i7 7700K (Note that you may need to update the UEFI BIOS of your motherboard to support the i7 7700 or 7700K.), or
(2) Get a 300 series motherboard like those in the Buyer's Guide for the i7 8700

Thx for advice. Checked with compatibility chart on Asus page. Seem that 7700 will be fine. So must return cpu to seller.
