I had an iPhone throughout 2009, and have had one ever since.
In 2008, the contract for my old phone (whose model I can't even remember now!) was up for renewal and the local O2 shop had some iPhone 3Gs in stock. I got a demo of one browsing the web, showing the video of Beaker from the Muppets doing Ode To Joy, and thought "that's brilliant, I'm having one of those". In particular, being able to read the news without having to get out of bed was life-changing.
