I have a system running Windows 7 and now I'm very interested in creating a separate drive to run Mountain Lion off of. Does my setup seem to be compatible?

CPU: Core I5-3570k
GPU: EVGA 560 SE
Mobo: Asus P8Z77-V LK
HDD: WD Caviar Blue 500GB
RAM: Cosair Vengeance 8GB

I am not that confident with the Asus motherboard you have. A Gigabyte motherboard would be much better.

And, we generally recommend getting a second hard drive to install and run OSX.

"I have a system running Windows 7"
he already has the system.

i would be interested in hearing why you arent that confident with his board.
i have a reason why i wouldnt personally use that board, but would be good to hear other viewpoints

I know he is running Windows 7, what I mean is that I am not that confident of installing and running OSX on it.

i see.
his board will work fine. uses realtek lan and 892 audio- pretty plain jane there.

i wouldnt want that particular board myself, as a modded bios cant be flashed on it (requires usb flashback feature which is missing on his board) meaning a patched appleintelcpupowermanagment.kext is used.
that in itself isnt necessarily bad, i just find it....dirty.

other than that, its a fine board. modified dsdt isnt needed, sleep/wake blah blah etc.
using other mobo brands isnt like installing on an amd system you know :D

Yes, but personally I still prefer it to be as compatible and as troublefree as possible. Isn't that the reason why we recommend Gigabyte motherboards over other brands?

its better for users if they are offered clear and concise options for boards. recommending multiple brands in the customac list would get confusing.
add to that the fact that gigabyte boards dont have an issue with the locked msr on their uefi boards, it makes more sense to recommend gigabyte.

that isnt to say other brands arent as compatible or trouble free.
flashing a bios isnt difficult and takes 30secs, but for some users it can be daunting.
other brands also dont dont need a modded dsdt (although some models may need a dsdt edit for sleep). other brands use realtek and intel chipsets.

if you are happy with gigabyte, stick with it.
in the case of this guy above, his board will work fine. just needs to use one patched kext which is available in multibeast. all other options in multibeast would be the same as if it were a gigabyte board
