Hi, years ago I made my i5 3570K hackintosh with help from this site. It is still running fine! I had it upgraded with an ATI R9 270X GPU and a SSD and I can do anything with it, final cut 1080 editing etc.

But now I have a 4K mirrorless cam, and editing this kind of video's can not be done (1 frame a second or so..)

So I must upgrade and searching for a cheap but good solution. Two options, but I don't know which is a better choice:

1 - new 2018 upgrade) i5 8400 6 core CPU with Gigabyte Z370M D3H, 16GB DDR4 ram
2 - refurb 2010) HP Z600, dual X5670 2.93ghz (12 core), 32GB ECC DDR3 ram

Price is about the same.

I want to re-use my ATI 270X, but maybe it is too less powerful for 4K I don't know.

I don't expect buttersmooth 4K editing, but I want that it will be doable.

What do you guys think is a better choice?

What software program are you using to edit video ?

Final Cut X. I use it now with El Capitan, but my next build will be Sierra (hot High). Edit: uhm, when using i5 8400 it must be High Sierra I think...

I would go with build number 1 and keep using the 270X until AMD graphics prices come down to earth again.

Thanks trs96. You have a specific reason for built 1, or just a good feeling ?

Massively faster single core performance. Will also greatly extend the number of years before you need to upgrade again. Hardware is under full warranty etc.

thank you both, well I see now there is a good reason to go for i5 :)
