Can I update apps(only) via software update?

Hi all!

As a newbie I have a noob question about updating, even I tried to search answers... So can I update my hackintosh's programs through software update. Apple just released for example Safari 6.0.2 and iTunes 11.0.2 updates... I know that I should not update OS X via software update, but what about apps?

Apps are usually ok..
Any doubts about an app, check part of forum that has Apple discussions in it.
Or do a search on forum for app

Everything other than incremental updates (10.8 to 10.8.2 for example) are fine to update through the software updater. The only reason the system updater is not advised is because you cannot modify the system after the install (before reboot) which prevents the user from setting up multibeast to fix any issues/new drivers.

Apologies if I'm a broken record, but how about security patches and Java updates?

(I'm running SL 10.6.8, so theoretically there shouldn't be any further incrementals.)

Those should be fine, I would maybe just search to see if any issues exist.
