Hi All,

I am currently running PT 8 HD2 on G5. I also have PT HD 10 and want to build a VERY QUIET rack mounted machine. I'm looking for suggestions on case and motherboard (2 PCI slots a must), Thunderbolt would be great, video card. I have checked Avid's PRO TOOLS requirements and will cross check them with what is suggested. I'm okay with NOT doing the latest and greatest. I know I will be changing again once PRO TOOLS decides what they are going to do on PT 11. For now, I want to be up and running away from the clunky, loud G5.

Thanks everyone!

Cheers.

what depth on the rack mount? 1U? 2U? or higher?

As for PCI slots - you are going to have a hard time finding a 7 series board with more than 1 PCI slot - most willl have only PCIe slots.

EDIT: Full ATX board or mATX?

Replace all fans with Noctua, id say you only need 3-4 . http://amazon.com/?tag=tonymacx86com-20

This power supply should be fairly quiet by Seasonic http://amazon.com/?tag=tonymacx86com-20

Throw in a Core i7 3770, not the k, turn off turbo and hyperthreading when running pro tools http://amazon.com/?tag=tonymacx86com-20

Here's a low noise heatsink for the cpu http://amazon.com/?tag=tonymacx86com-20

H77 is not good for PCI-X Digidesign cards. No native PCI support. Look for Q67 or B75 board.

Thank you axedye. I look into all of these suggestions. Are you running Pro Tools on your machine? What about mikonmac's comment? Thoughts?

Thanks Mikonmac. I'm still learning here. How'd you find that info? I'm not doubting you, I'm wanting to learn is all. Do you Pro Tools on your build?

Hi Going Bald. I am looking for a 4U space. Thanks for the clarity. I hear ya about only finding 1 PCI slot. I may need to live with that for now until I move to PT X HD Native. I don't think I will go HDX card unless I get a good swap price from Avid. I'm doing my best to build/buy for today with a bit of wisdom for tomorrow's technology. Again thanks.

Personally, I like the Chenbro brand. A little more expensive than some, but very sturdy. YGWYPF.

How many PCI cards do you have? GA has a board out which would make a great ProTools board IF your version will run in Lion or Mountain Lion. OS X Snow Leopard, unfortunately, will not boot from HDD/SSD on the 77/75 series main boards - No SL in Ivy Bridge.
