Budget screen for Photo editing

Hey guys!

I've build my first hackintosh yesterday (still working on getting HD4600 to work).
What do you guys use as a collor correct monitor? I'm looking into the Eizo screens but my budget is only 300-400$. So maybe there gaming monitors? Becausce the color edge screens are a bit expensive.

Any suggestions?

I have just had the same question come up, so here is my 2 cents worth:

Well if you already have a colour profiling solution you need to check if it is compatible with LED backlighting. Mine is the Datacolor Spyder2 Pro which can't profile LED monitors so I will need to get another solution.

I bought the LG 24EB23TM-B which is an AH-IPS monitor 1920x1200

I have decided that as I am not printing and mostly upload to web and therefore can't control the screens on which my pictures are viewed it is not a big deal to me.

But if you are serious about colour management, spend the money on an x-rite profiler or ColorMunki Display $165,- (or Datacolor Spyder4 not express) and use what you have left for the monitor, just be sure to get an IPS and maybe a WLED backlight monitor. Prefer DVI over HDMI as some cheap monitors have trouble communicating with the computer and negotiating the resolution. DVI has a better track record in my experience, but not saying HDMI will give you trouble for sure.

PLS displays and PMVA are sometimes better at black levels but PMVA has trouble with ghosting, according to some people if you game or view fast moving videos.

Bottom line is keep in mind how much you actually need and buy accordingly, not too much or too little : ) I tend to get caught up in specs and wanting "The Best", But I end up much more happy when I balance it out and just get what I need : )

I know this thread is old, but I figured I'd chime in. I use a Dell U2412M calibrated with a Colormunki Display and Dispcalgui. The OEM software is junk and never worked right for me. There is a bit of a learning curve with Dispcalgui, but once you figure out what settings to put it to, everything works well. Greys are neutral and colors look properly saturated.

The monitor was about $290 via Amazon and the colorimeter retails for about $180 new and around $100 used.

FYI, the 2412 is a 24" IPS with an LED Backlight. The res is 1920x1200 and has VGA and DVI. It's connected to my hackintosh via DVI. Never had any issues with it. It really is a beautiful display.
