I don't know if this has just started, I've had my Lion install for a while now, but I've noticed that the dvd-rom keeps spinning up as if the system is trying to read a disc, but it's empty. It seems to do it every 15 mins. or so. Is there some setting in the OS doing this or should I be looking in the BIOS?

Go to System Preferences > Energy Saver.
De-select the 'Put hard disks to sleep when possible' option
