Big List of Solutions for El Capitan Install Problems

Status
Not open for further replies.
Little bit further of an explanation:

If you get the message Can't find /System/Library/Kernels/kernel, it could be that the system is attempting to boot El Capitan using Chimera in legacy mode from the existing drive.

Chimera doesn't support El Capitan. You must choose the USB or system drive in UEFI mode for the hard drive to get Clover to load. Set boot priority in BIOS to load UEFI system drive as first option, or set CSM in BIOS to load UEFI mode first.

It does not work. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

My Mainboard is: asrock h77 pro4/mvp

I would be glad if you could help me.

Took a look at your threads. Doesn't look like you had the problem I was having (and FWIW my kb/m worked fine in the installer.) Perhaps Unibeast is the problem. To clarify, when you say you made an installer with a dsdt, you copied your Yosemite dsdt to /EFI/Clover/Acpi/patched, correct? Unibeast doesn't prompt you to put anything there. Perhaps I can try that. What Kexts do you have in EFI/clover/Kexts/10.11?

Edit: well, it didn't work, and entering the installer again gave me a prohibitory sign.

I cloned my Yosemite partition to a spare HDD and in that new partition ran a direct upgrade to 10.11. I booted from the Clover bootloader installed in my Yosemite partition. In my clover 10.11 kext folder I have the fakesmc, Realtek8111 and voodoops2 kexts. When I first booted I did not have mouse or KB, so I booted through Yosemite and made all the config.plist DSDT patches using a property list editor. Once I had the USB ports working I focused on fixing the sound.

2 more fixes to add to the top:

boot0af error
Clover doesn't boot- it just shows boot0af error. Usually in Clover Legacy Boot Mode. Try recreating the installer USB using Master Boot Record (MBR) instead of GUID.

Boot Maintenance Manager
Clover doesn't boot. System boots to blue and grey Boot Maintenance Manager. This happens when using USB 3.0 port. Use a USB 2.0 port or hub for best results.

boot0af error
Clover doesn't boot- it just shows boot0af error. Usually in Clover Legacy Boot Mode. Try recreating the installer USB using Master Boot Record (MBR) instead of GUID.

I'm getting this, but on my SSD; the USB worked fine. It's a legacy motherboard.

...

Install reboots or completes but El Capitan drive does not appear as a boot option in the Clover menu

  • Try booting to the installer again. It may just have more work to do, and you'll see the El Capitan system drive after the next phase of the install.
  • If this is a legacy install and the install completed fully but the drive doesn't show up: as yet unresolved

...
A lot of us have set our BIOS Boot Mode Selection parameter to Legacy only. I had to change mine to UEFI and Legacy to using the UniBeast Clover thumb drive, and, then after installation, change the parameter to UEFI (only) to boot from the installation drive without the reboot problem. YMMV, but that worked for me on my Z77 based system.

I'm getting the "You shut down the computer because of a problem" loop. Did a straight upgrade from Yosemite on Clover and everything look fine but I keep having this prompt on every boot.

I somehow managed to get into the installer but I can't use my mouse now. Do you guys had the same problem and know how to fix that?

I'm getting the "You shut down the computer because of a problem" loop. Did a straight upgrade from Yosemite on Clover and everything look fine but I keep having this prompt on every boot.

Try without any hardware connected except keyboard, mouse, and install USB drive. Also try a USB2 port if you have one, or different USB ports just for grins. If all that doesn't work, maybe clear out any non-Apple kexts from /System/Library/Extensions/ and try booting without caches?

I have only my keyboard and mouse connected. Don't remember I need anything additional in /S/L/E as I'm using Clover and has kext patches on-the-fly, gonna try to boot without caches in awhile.

EDIT: Nada, without caches also produce the same prompt. Guess last resort is a clean install of El Capitan.
