Atheros AR9485 driver

I'm on my mac :D after 2nd Unibeast boot (still need to run the installer etc.) and online with my AR5B93 wifi card which was detected as an Airport card and setup automatically. Just hope my first hard drive boot goes ok too.

Fantastic - that was quick!

Am I right in saying the AR5B93 is a Wifi-only card (no BT)?

Yes its wifi only, I've plugged in a tiny (the case is D shaped and about the size of the end of my thumb, and sticks out about 12mm from the laptop) USB bluetooth dongle I bought from my local "PoundWorld" shop for, well £1, thats working fine in Mac osx/Linux/Windows without drivers :D

Hmm, that's my fallback too. Like you, I have ordered an AR9285 in the hope this will work (from http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Atheros-A...Computing_NetworkCards_RL&hash=item5aec27da84). I was careful to select a card which was specific to HP as some of the cards state explicitly that they will not work with a HP.

I am really impressed by your work - so quick. What bootloader did you use, and did you bother with the Probook installer at all or just make use of the kexts in the Working forum, and have you fiddled with the DSDT at all yet? (From a previous Hackintosh install, long ago, I remembered the work really started fater the intiial install!).

Finally, did you dump your Recovery partition, and I guess will be downloading Windows stuff from the HP site?

Regards,

Stuart

Mad_Sunday, from now on known as my favorite guienia pig, could you give us the exact link of the buyer you got it from, so maybe other can join you in the "guienia pig experience".
Jokes aside, thats really great to hear, I hope we all can replicate that, thx.

Edit:
I have one question about the Atheros AR9485, since it has a integrated BT4 that works nicely for me, I could keep it for that and use the remaining mPCIe slot to add an osx supported card. That's why I was wounding if the BT uses the same wireless antenas or more likely has an antenna coil already integrated on the card itself?

I believe the combo has a BT chip (looks like a rectanglar slab) and shares the same external antenna (built into the Probook case).

No problem but they only had one...........http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160954179283?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

With regard to the other Pci-e slot (WWAN slot) I've thought about that too, HOWEVER, on giving mine a closer inspection, it doesn't exist! The space is there but no slot!

Before discovering this I also ordered on of these with the idea of plugging a usb dongle in it..........http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290809078975?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2648

Together with one of these ..............http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140571060681?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2648

Then for Bluetooth I have the poundworld one which works fine, it looks like this is the same .............http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bluetooth...K_Computing_Networking_SM&hash=item1e76693663

BUT the HP manual states that you can't swap the wwan and wlan card over, and googling suggests that some "pci-e slots" are actually usb connected only, so I suspect if you do have a wwan card fitted its a usb device on a pci-e "card"?

I'm expecting these tomorrow or Tuesday, I'll test them out if the card and dongle will fit in my wifi slot.

I have a WWAN module and you are right... I done some digging and it looks like the device is mounted on an USB port and in windows it simulates COM ports.
So that wont work, maybe if there is a mPCIe/USB BT4 card... Since in most occasions BT is attached to USB ports anyway. Anyway, thx for the links.

EDIT:
I tried to put the AR9485 in the WWAN slot and as i suspected the bluetooth still works, so my initial idea is still standing...
I only get an annoying message at boot
"The system has detected that a wireless module installed in the system is not supported and disabled it.
WWAN MODULE ID (703)"
Maybe is possible to disable that in BIOS, did not look into it.

Another thing that poped in my head is what about an mpcie/USB wlan card, do those exist, specially the kind that works on OSX. This way we would avoid any kind of white listing since is USB, but i have no idea if cards like that exist or if they are any good.

But if i can get the WLAN to work as you and use the AR9485 for BT in the WWAN slot and not have that message at the beginning (that slows the boot) i will be a happy camper.

PS: since you have the bragging rights, can you post a screenshot where it shows system info about wireless or something, sometimes it sounds to good to be true :D?
