ASUS ThunderboltEX 3 working with GIGABYTE G1 Gaming GA-Z170MX-Gaming 5

Status
Not open for further replies.
There are two different gigabyte THB-C connectors ; newest are smaller. So Asus
THB-C dont fit . I cut connector and connect every pins to motherboard .

I enclose pictures . Don't get any info signał on fine pins in smaller connector ?
In gigabyte manual on picture is only number one (pin) so I think that order signals is
reverse than in bigger connector.

I have Gigabyte Z170X Ultra Gaming and small connector. Asus ThunderboltEX3 not working
at all (windows ,Mac) so today I must change pins order in THB-C connector.

Yet after test@benchmarks Asus Thunderbolt EX3 on Gigabyte motherboard z170X ultra
. Yes pins in small connector are opposite than in large connector.

Large connector pins, first pin is from left side

1.black
2. green
3.brown
4. orange
5 yellow

Small connector pins, first pin is from right side

1.black
2. green
3.brown
4. orange
5 yellow

If You connect pins like on picture that Asus Thunderbolt EX3 works very well.
So we must do/buy proper plug or (not recommended) connect each pins and
be very careful not to abut pins.

Thunderbolt includes PCIe (for any PCIe device) and DisplayPort (for displays) signals. Thunderbolt Docks, or Thunderbolt adapters, or Thunderbolt hard drives, contain a Thunderbolt chip that provides a PCIe downstream port for PCIe controller chips for different devices such as USB, SATA, Ethernet, FireWire. A USB controller chip can have connected to it a USB audio codec. A Thunderbolt expansion chassis will have one or more PCIe slots where you can connect any type of PCIe card containing controller chips such as those already mentioned, but also graphics controller chips, etc. A Thunderbolt dock with more than one PCIe device or a Thunderbolt expansion chassis with more than one PCIe slot will use a PCIe switch chip (pci-bridge) with an upstream port and multiple downstream ports.

Apple has an overview of Thunderbolt technology.
https://developer.apple.com/library...eptual/ThunderboltDevGuide/Basics/Basics.html

You should be able to see all the devices connected to a Thunderbolt port in the IORegistryExplorer.app.

Below is an example.
1) RP05 is a root port. It's like a downstream port with no upstream port. This is one of the ports of the motherboard's PCH (platform controller hub) chipset.
1.1) pci8086,1578 is the DSL6540 Thunderbolt 3 Bridge [Alpine Ridge 4C 2015]. It has one upstream port connected to the root port. It has multiple downstream ports.
1.1.1) pci8086,1577 is the DSL6540 Thunderbolt 3 NHI [Alpine Ridge 4C 2015].
1.1.2) pci8086,156d is the DSL5520 Thunderbolt 2 Bridge [Falcon Ridge 4C 2013]. This is in an OWC Thunderbolt 2 dock connected by a Startech Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter to a downstream port of the Alpine Ridge chip. This has multiple downstream ports.
1.1.2.1) pci1b73,1100 is the FL1100 USB 3.0 Host Controller (Fresco Logic device 1100) connected to a downstream port of the Falcon Ridge chip. This has a USB audio codec device attached (below is shown only PCIe device, not USB devices).
1.1.2.2) pci8086,1533 is the I210 Gigabit Network Connection
1.1.2.3) another USB chip for the USB ports of the dock.
1.1.2.4) pci1d2d,9001 is the FW643 PCI Express 1394b Controller (PHY/Link) (FireWire)
1.1.2.5) pci8086,1578 is the DSL6540 Thunderbolt 3 Bridge [Alpine Ridge 4C 2015] in an AKiTiO Thunder3 Duo Pro. The upstream port is connected to a downstream port of the OWC Thunderbolt 2 Dock's Falcon Ridge chip using an Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter (which supports reverse direction, unlike the Startech adapter mentioned above).
1.1.2.5.1) pci1b21,625 is the Asmedia (ASM) SATA controller chip. A hard drive is connected to that (below is shown only PCIe devices, not SATA devices).
1.1.3) pci8086,15b6 is the DSL6540 USB 3.1 Controller [Alpine Ridge] (supports USB 3.1 gen 2 speed of 10 Gb/sec). This is part of Thunderbolt 3 since it uses a USB-C connector. A Thunderbolt 2 chip does not have a USB controller.

How to enable front panel on mac os 10.12
https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GC-USB-31-BAY-rev-10#ov

The asus and ga cards are both intel alpine ridge chips, use the exact same drivers, require the same headers etc .. just different manufacturers
All motherboards and add in cards use different firmwares for the Thunderbolt 3 chips. The situation is a total mess. Intel should not have given control of the firmware to the OEMs. OEMs are slow to give updates, or won't give updates at all. The problem is that different firmwares may have different device compatibilities.
https://communities.intel.com/thread/111547

Anyone know the versions of the firmwares used in the various Thunderbolt 3 Add-In Cards?
1) ASUS Thunderbolt 3 EX (single DP)
2) GIGABYTE GC-ALPINE RIDGE (dual DP)
3) ASRock Thunderbolt 3 AIC (dual DP - not listed at https://thunderbolttechnology.net/p...&field_prod_tb_version_value_many_to_one=tbv3 )

There are two different gigabyte THB-C connectors ; newest are smaller.

The GC-ALPINE RIDGE header cable has two of the large connectors (5 pin 2.5 mm pitch). One end also has a small connector (5 pin 2 mm pitch) so the cable will work with either type of connector.

Yep. Works perfect (ish) on my setup so far. Ga-zx170x gaming 3 , 6600k, thunderboltex 3 card , onboard graphics.
After several restarts haven't had the bios issue mentioned , but I am still on bios f7 and the m2 slots aren't being used.

So yes, I comfirm it works, Currently running an Apollo twin mkii via an Apple thunderbolt cable -> Apple thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter -> thunderboltex 3 card on a z170x gaming 3

Hello, I have a similar set up. I updated the bios on my asus z170 Deluxe when i installed the thunderbolt ex3 to the mother board, and now i cant get my system to boot into mac os. what did you do to get this all working?. i just recently purchased a apollo twin mk 2. Now all i can do is look at it on my desk. lol.

Hotplug would be cool. I read a few posts on here and other forums that seem to suggest that this may be resolved in future with an SSDT. Interestingly the New Macbook Pro uses the Intel JHL 6540 Thunderbolt controller. A lot of motherboards and this Thunderbolt card use the Intel DSL 6540 Thunderbolt controller. I know that AppleThunderboltNHI.kext is responsilble for hotplug on a Mac. I wonder if the first stage of fixing hotplug lays in looking at the device ID of the JHL 6540 on a Macbook Pro Late 2016?

Unfortunately I cannot guarantee that this card will work with the sabertooth z87. It would be worth a try though? I bought mine on Amazon with a 30 day return policy.

Had a few issues where Thunderbolt keeps disappearing in Bios every few reboots. At first I wondered if it was related to my NVME SSD and pcie lanes? My NVME is my main boot and I have my spare hard drives committed to other things at the moment so its hard to test.

It would be great if someone else without an M2 NVME ssd ends up testing to confirm.

Or potentially the Gigabyte Bios itself?

Which might be the reason that we haven't seen many of the Alpine Ridge cards from Gigabyte available for purchase. Perhaps they are working on a Bios update?

It does work fine once the OS is booted. However the Bios issue makes it a little unreliable for me as it sometimes means several reboots to get it working.

I am considering returning the card to be honest. For pro audio/music production I need Thunderbolt to be 100% reliable. At this stage it still seems a little too experimental for me. My curiosity got the best of me!

I just completed a build using an ATX GA Z170X Gaming 7 for a friend. A very similar board to my Matx GA Z170MX Gaming 5. However it has on board Thunderbolt 3 working (flawlessly) and 2 M2 slots for NVME. I am considering selling my current Motherboard and PC case to upgrade to this motherboard and a larger ATX case. Once I have sold these parts I could purchase the new ones for the difference in price that the ThunderboltEX 3 cost me

Hello

I have the z170x gaming 7. I tried to connect my apollo to my high sierra hackintosh , don't think it read very well then again, I'm still in the beginning phases of my hackintosh as I'm still working out the elementary kinks (nvidia drivers, wifi/bluetooth, IOs etc.) Do you happen to know the settings you/your friend used for thunderbolt in the BIOs or did it natively? if not, could you perhaps walk me through the tweaks you had to make? I bought apple's TB2 to 3 adapter but I understand it's next to useless so I'll be returning it. Did he use any adapters I should maybe look at?

Thanks
