Apple Reveals macOS 10.14 Mojave at WWDC - Available Fall 2018

Today Apple previewed the next major revision to its macOS operating system, macOS 10.14 Mojave. In addition to increased performance, improvements to the operating system include a systemwide dark mode and key changes to the Desktop and Finder. Mojave also has new core Apple apps such as News, Stocks, Voice Memos, and Home, which are part of a previewed multi-year project to bring native iOS apps to macOS. Other previewed updates are Dynamic desktop, desktop Stacks, Continuity camera, group FaceTime, and Siri shortcuts. Finally, Apple has completely redesigned the Mac App Store and provided new privacy and security features. A Developer Preview version will be available immediately for registered Apple Developers, with a Public Beta expected in July.

The developer preview of macOS Mojave is available to Mac Developer Program members starting today. To help make macOS even better, Apple is also providing a macOS Public Beta Program, which gives customers early access to macOS Mojave and invites them to try out the release and submit their feedback. Mac users can participate in the Apple Beta Software Program for macOS Mojave this July and download the final version for free from the Mac App Store this fall.

In order to download and test out macOS Mojave, you must be a registered and paid member of the Apple Developer Program. Please note, our rules prohibit discussion of the Developer Beta, but will allow discussion of the Public Beta when it is available.

Looking forward to it, they didn't show off any new mac's. Could this mean a shift to ARM?

The best and most important announcement... Apple will not be merging macOS and iOS. Craig F. made that very clear with an emphatic NO ! You can run some iOS apps on macOS but that is something completely different than merging the two. All this means is that there will be fat binaries containing different versions of the same application for different platforms. Each version adapted to the unique requirements of its platform. So the iOS version will be designed to be controlled via a touch interface and the macOS one via a mouse/trackpad and pointer interface.

I liked when Craig Federighi dispelled the notion that they were trying to merge macOS with iOS.

The most notable non-announcement is Arm based macOS.

So technically speaking there is no foresight on macOS going ARM. macOS will stay x86 apparently?

What popped at me even more is the big emphasis they made on Metal and how great Macs are when combined with eGPU's
which kinda gives good hope for further integration of Nvidia graphics maybe even natively?
Even if not native, web drivers should probably be more optimised and run better i guess?

Any thoughts on that?

• Mac mini (Late 2012 or newer)
• iMac (Late 2012 or newer)
• iMac Pro (2017)
• Mac Pro (Late 2013, plus mid 2010 and mid 2012 models with recommend Metal-capable GPU)
