hi i am in the process of building an htpc windows/mac mediacenter/gaming machine for myself, and i have a couple of questions regarding the apple remote.

i want to be able to use an apple remote as i like it because its much more simplistic than media center remotes on pc's. i am buying a htpc case with built in IR function. my questions are will an apple remote work with a hackintosh? would it still work in windows as well? i would like to be able to turn on/off the machine with the remote, though i understand this would probably be very difficult, so i would be fine with just being able to sleep/wake the machine if i can at least do that. would i be able to navigate basic media center apps (itunes, front row, xbmc, windows media center, etc) with apple remote? im fine with not being able to do advanced stuff like with a mce remote, i just want basic navigation and the power to sleep/wake my machine on either Operating system at will.

anyone with experience on this would be much appreciated. thank you.

It can be done - but I'm not sure of all of the requirements. I've just tried searching for a blog I found a few weeks ago, where someone had bought a MB IR receiver and installed it into his case - try somewhere in this thread

Not sure if you could get cheap usb ir receivers to work.. but worth a go!

I'm slowly buying parts for my first hackintosh - and this will be one of the things I'll be trying to add.

Good luck!

Ans what about using "remote" app on your iPhone with your iTunes on your hackintosh ?

The point of this was to use an apple remote mostly for simplicity. I'm making a htpc/gaming hackintosh machine, and want to make it easy as possible for anyone other than myself to just be able to operate with a minimalist remote rather than be overwhelmed with a media center type remote. I'm thinking though that this is all easier said than done for a hackintosh, depending how far you wanna take it. I may still look into this though but for now I'm just settling with an ipazzport for all in one control. Maybe in the future ill do an apple remote for "the rest of us" lol.

Thanks mustang80 for the link. i went to that page and looked through all of the pages, but couldn't find anything specific regarding my questions. I have been busy and only just now got back into this, so when i tried posting a reply on that page, the thread wont let me login to post a reply. im guessing it having something to do with that being a legacy page or whatever. Anyways, if anyone can help me, i have a couple of questions regarding that ir receiver on a hackintosh. i notice most people say that it works to put osx to sleep and wake. im assuming you cannot power on and off the computer completly? this is not that big of a deal, but more so i am just curious, as i will probably mostly only ever put my HTPC to sleep and wake. my other question is does anyone know if this would work as well on a pc? i read something about getting the drivers from bootcamp, which should not be hard to find, and i understand you cant do much on windows, but i found an article referring some secondary programs to customise an apple remote for pc use. my main reasoning for this is because i specifically want an apple remote because of its simplicity over windows media center remotes, and i would like to make it used for a media center like XBMC for anyone to be able to just pick it up and navigate rather than the 20-something buttons of a media center remote on windows. But i also would like this remote to work whether one osx or windows as well. :) any help would be much appreciated.

And

http://www.streacom.com/

Both have htpc case with ir

Edit : if it can help you...
thanks for the help, but this actually contradicts what im trying to accomplish. I actually already have a pc case with a infrared and remote, but they wont work with an apple remote, so ill need an actual apple ir like mustang80's suggestion. im just curious about a few more things because while my current case already had ir, I have my eye on a new pc case and am considering modding it to use the apple ir.

No I don't mind hacking up a Mac ir to work with my hackintosh. I'm just trying to get as much info to my questions answered so I don't waste my money and time if it doesn't work right for my purposes. The case I want has this nice slim trim along the front that I thought would be perfect to hide a Bluetooth adapter, ir sensor, and possibly another wireless adapter behind the case to give off a good clean look, while still placing the wireless sensors in the front of the case instead of behind the case. Problem is I don't know much about the functionality of the Mac remote itself, and while a windows media center remote has a few more functions, it also has too many. So I guess I have to settle for one or the other. There really isn't any in between. But if the apple remote with Mac ir sensor can work as a basic multimedia navigation controller, while allowing me to sleep and wake my hackintosh, I'll be happy :)
