Among other hardware launches today at WWDC, Apple previewed a new class of iMac- the iMac Pro. The newly specced computer will have up to 18 core Xeon CPU, Radeon Vega graphics, and up to 128GB RAM, making it the "fastest Mac ever". The new Mac also includes an entirely redesigned interior with improved cooling capability, Thunderbolt 3, 10GB Ethernet, 1080p FaceTime Camera, new space grey Magic Mouse and Magic Keyboard.

Finally Apple is taking their Pro Users seriously again. This announcement was something that I had heard was coming but I never expected a 5K iMac to have this kind of power. If only Phil Schiller were there and said "Can't meet the needs of our Pro users, my a... " it would have been perfect. He'll probably get to intro the Mac Pro 2018 version.

Wonder how many cores and teraflops of compute power the next (2018) Mac Pro will have ?

The $4,999 entry level price tag seems steep but you are getting a lot for your money. ECC ram, workstation class graphics too.
Consider the cost of that 27" 5K display that you'll be looking at. Don't know how they can keep 18 cores cool enough inside that enclosure when they are all put to use. If anyone can do it, Apple can. Even though the 2013 MP was a major flop they learned from their mistakes and moved on.

With this one going upto a lovely 22 cores, the new Pro would have to be at least dual socket.
It's 22 teraflops and 18 cores max for the iMac Pro:

The all-new iMac Pro, with its gorgeous 27-inch Retina 5K display, up to 18-core Xeon processors and up to 22 Teraflops of graphics computation, is the most powerful Mac ever made. Featuring a stunning new space gray enclosure, iMac Pro packs incredible performance for advanced graphics editing, virtual reality content creation and real-time 3D rendering.

Never saw this coming. Thought they might go up to 12 cores and possibly an external GPU. Looks like the MBP will be able to use one though.

My mistake, I mixed those up. 18 cores in an imac is still very impressive though i reckon.

Beautiful device - Very cool to see..
