Apple Further Restricts Upgrade Options on New iMacs

From our testing, we’ve found that removing this drive from the system, or even from that bay itself, causes the machine’s hard drive fans to spin at maximum speed and replacing the drive with any non-Apple original drive will result in the iMac failing the Apple Hardware Test (AHT).

OUCH. o_O o_O

So I take it that SMC fan control would be useless then because it being part of their firmware in a sense that the fans think there is an issue with the HDD if it's not there.

So happy I went the hackintosh route even more now.

Yup, I've been checking that out for a while. It's not that big an issue anymore with the arrival of Thunderbolt (is that what it's called ? It's early here).
It seems to me that apple is trying to make iMacs into appliances, like a fridge or a washing machine, only not as long lasting. Don't like it anymore ? Throw it out !
Shame though. I'd just about convinced myself to buy an iMac after the summer holidays...now, I'm not so sure anymore.
