Apple’s next version of OS X was just announced at WWDC. It will be named El Capitan. A Developer Preview version will be available immediately for registered Apple Developers, with a Public Beta expected in mid-July.
Along with bug fixes, performance and speed improvements, major UI enhancements include a better version of Mission Control, side-by-side splitscreen windows arrangements, new trackpad gestures, spotlight improvements, new notes app, and safari tab adjustments.
Graphics performance with El Capitan has also been drastically improved. Apple claims 50% rendering speed and 40% performance and efficiency using OpenCL and OpenGL with the new 'Metal for Mac'. Apple also said 10x improvement in drawing performance for gaming as well over OS X Yosemite. Epic Games also said they've seen 70% less CPU usage over OpenGL.
The developer preview of El Capitan is available to Mac Developer Program members starting today. To help make OS X even better, Apple is also providing a OS X Public Beta Program, which gives customers early access to El Capitan and invites them to try out the release and submit their feedback. Mac users can participate in the OS X Beta Program for El Capitan this July and download the final version for free from the Mac App Store this fall.
In order to download and test out OS X 10.11 El Capitan, you must be a registered and paid member of the Apple Developer Program. A Public Beta is expected to release sometime later this Summer, with general availability in the Fall.
