I have used ASM1142 and ASM2142 based USB 3.1 gen 2 cards. Both chipsets are natively supported by macOS since at least Sierra.

I'm looking at the ASUS 90MC03D0-M0AAY0 USB 3.1 C CARD as a possible addition to my HP Compaq Elite 8300. I can't recall at the moment where I read it, but would this not work, due to the motherboard not being capable of supporting the USB c protocol? Or, would it work?

USB 3.1 is backwards compatible with all former USB standards. Whether the chipset of the adapter is macOS compatible, that is what matters. I don't think that Asus card is Low Profile capable for your SFF. Take a look at this one with a LP bracket.

I found this one as well: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B074QGBXSP/?tag=tonymacx86c0c-20
Seems to be same chipset. Not exactly sure what they mean by no need for extra power supply - "assuming" they "might" mean that the ports may supply power to what gets plugged in.
Interesting to note on the one you provided a link for, it seems to suggest that it does not supply power to devices connected. Is that how you read it?

Thank you!!
