Case

I swear everyone here has built a G5 Hackintosh, it's 'The Case' to build in. I really like it naked, I like that the all the hardware is black with silver or white accents, it's a good look for the G5. All the cables plug in on the left, apart from 8 pin CPU and CPU fan. This G5 isn't cut so the back ports are inaccessible, but I plugged in the Ethernet and 2 USB3.1 extensions. The front panel USB 2 isn't connected yet though the power button is working.

Comments

I've built G5 mods before, but this one is easily my favorite. This project started in November of last year after reading this.

I'd already built an AMD Hackintosh pairing a Ryzen 3600X to a B550 motherboard, and yes, it could game very well in Windows. But it was noisy and hungry and felt over-whelming as a Hackintosh, I couldn't connect with it!. So my idea, build a Hackintosh using a budget AM4 motherboard paired with a Ryzen 5000 Series processor.

Motherboard

A320I-KMB.png

I chose Asus Prime for my board most of my previous builds have been Gigabyte and I fancied something different. Can it Hackintosh?. I did some Google-Fu to see if anybody had built one using this motherboard, not much, just a vague post somewhere else, but Monterey was working. I decided to get it, luckily I found a good one on eBay for half MSRP and I'm really happy with it. What I like, It's small!. Measuring just 6.7 inch x 6.7 inch (17 cm x 17 cm), lots of headers and connections and brilliantly placed with two front facing SATA ports and number two, in the list below.

2 x Aura RGB Strip Headers
1 x USB 3.1 Gen 1(up to 5Gbps) connector(s) support(s) additional 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1 port(s) (19-pin)
1 x USB 2.0 connector(s) support(s) additional 4 USB 2.0 port(s)
1 x M.2 Socket 3 with M key, type 2242/2260/2280 storage devices support (SATA & PCIE 3.0 x 4 mode)
1 x TPM header
4 x SATA 6Gb/s connector(s)
1 x CPU Fan connector(s)
1 x CPU OPT Fan connector(s) (1 x 4 -pin)
2 x Chassis Fan connector(s) (1 x 4 -pin)
1 x 24-pin EATX Power connector(s)
1 x 8-pin ATX 12V Power connector(s)
1 x Front panel audio connector(s) (AAFP)
1 x System panel(s)
1 x Clear CMOS jumper(s)

What I don't like. ASUS could of stacked another M.2_WIFI slot below the M.2 M key socket, like on a Gigabyte H110MSTX motherboard, Oh well.

UPDATE
The 'A' series of AMD motherboards like the 320 and 520 are ok, but they're not taking advantage of the 5700Xs full power. I picked up a used ASUS Prime B550 board from Micro Center, it has 2 M.2 slots and Intel Wi-Fi / BT!, that was my criteria for the board, it also gets the most out of the 5700X and doesn't seem limited under benching.

Processor

The point of this build was to have a Ryzen 5000 series processor running it!. The one I wanted wasn't available at the time, Tech sites suggested end of April 2022. It was December 2021, four months away, so I picked up a used Ryzen 7 1700 from Newegg, my first 8-Core processor. For a five year old CPU it performed well, it's quiet, very quiet. Single core performance isn't great to be honest, but that's not why I bought eight of them, Monterey likes more cores IMO!. After months of waiting, I picked up a AMD Ryzen 7 5700X from Micro Center for $250, tax excluded. I really like AMD 8-Core processors, I felt connected to the 7 1700.

GPU

The Infamous Sapphire Pulse RX 580 8GB, what a tank of a graphics card. It might be showing it's age, but I think it can still hold it's own. My preferred resolution on a 42" screen is, or looks like 2560x1440.

UPDATE
2023 has been a good year for Hackintosh on AMD!. First we got the NootedRed.kext that enabled integrated graphics on AMD APUs, then from the same team behind NRed we also got NootRX.kext. Both these kexts replace the WhateverGreen.kext in your EFI/Kexts Folder and shouldn't be used with any DeviceProperties. I'm using NootRX for this build and that allowed me to purchase a Sapphire Pulse RX 6700XT, a definite upgrade from the RX 580, GB6 Metal RX 580/66K, RX 6700XT/173K!.

Installation Guide

Important!. Check you have the latest BIOS update before installing a Ryzen 5000 series processor on your 320 motherboard, 6042 is the latest version. Gigabyte and ASUS released 'unofficial' versions Late October 21, I can't confirm that a 5000, will work on that version, 5862.

Creating The USB Installer.

Open Terminal and type.

Code:
sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Monterey.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/USB /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Monterey.app --nointeraction

Once the process has finished, the disk can be safely ejected. I've written a detailed guide with BIOS settings, link below.

EFI. You can download the A320I-K EFI through the HackinDROM App, install it directly onto the EFI partition of your USB Monterey installer, or inside a folder somewhere, HackinDROM will also keep your EFI up to date. Remember to select the right number of cores for your processor, I was updating from a 8 core processor to another 8 core, so I didn't have to change anything.

Network

I'm happily using Ethernet for my network connection. I haven't tried BT yet, I'll report back.

Sound

This build is plugged into a 42" HISENSE TV and sound works through HDMI.

Sleep Wake

Perfect, has never caused me any issues, restart and shutdown work like they're supposed too.

Temperature

What I really like about both the 8-Core Ryzen 7 1700 and the 7 5700X is that they're both so quiet and efficient, the Wraith Spire does a great job of bringing the temperature down quickly. I sold a Ryzen 5 3600X because it just seemed noisy and hungry, not sure the Wraith Spire included in the box was up to it. I don't know if that's a general issue with 6 core Ryzen processors or the 'X' version. The idle temp for the 5700X ?, 28 C is the lowest I've seen it go. Opening the monitors in AMD Power Gadget App will add 15 C and many, many Watts. It's been suggested I report the issue on the Gh App page.

Benchmarks

The interesting bit!. I already posted my GB5 Bench on another thread, in the links below. Using Cinebench R23, First thing that struck me was single core score. Looks like AMD upped their game in that department!, am I happy I have a couple of Threadrippers below me?, yes!. Interestingly CBR23 displays Single Core @ 4.7 GHz, it's advertised at 4.6!.

Now dual booting Ventura Beta 4 and Windows 11 Pro!. The A320I-K doesn't offer much in the way of expansion and I wanted to try W11 out. Fortunately I have two USB 3.1 Gen1 sockets available through extensions, because I have no other access to the rear ports. I 'borrowed' the EVO+ with a MHQJRH heat sink from a Dell build and fitted it to USB3 enclosure and connected it up. Good o see macOS come out top in the GB5 Bench!.

Cool build. Seems Tonymac allows AMD CPU builds now?
Last time I tried to post I was banned for even mentioning my AMD build.
Hence I haven't been here in years but wanted to see if Tonymac was still militantly against AMD hacks.
Take care folks.

AMD hackintoshes are now permitted on the tonymacx86 forum ever since OpenCore started supported AMD CPUs.

Please fill out your profile's components in accordance with the forum's Profile Rule(s). By doing so, you help us help you better. TIA.

Thanks!. I know cool right?!, they announced it two years ago.

That's convenient!!, 1/2 the bottom shelf done!.

Having the ability to 'plug-in' windows 11 for some casual gaming is convenient for me. And after installing AMD Chip-set drivers there was quite a boost in performance, edging towards the mythical 10K multi-core score. Benching Ventura in CineBench saw a small increase, GB5 seemed it bit more wild about about picking an actual score!.

I like to play a game once in a while and being able to dual boot into Windows11 Pro gives me access to all sorts of worlds to conquer. I'm all about Microsoft Flight Simulator at the moment and the latest update brings big improvements to graphics, not bad for an RX580 on a A320 chipset!.
