Hi I am planning on building the Customac Pro following the TONYMACX component list with a GTX 650 graphics card (hopefully in a modded G5 case). But I noticed that for the corsair power supply that is recommended, alot of people are having problems with the fans making a chirping noise that is really loud. I'm looking for an alternate power supplies and was considering one of the following two enermax PSUs. Was wondering if one or either would do the trick?

ENERMAX NAXN 82+ ENM750AWT 750W - $119

or

ENERMAX NAXN 82+ ENP650AWT B - $79

thanks for your help
Ben

I have never used either of those, but I would venture to say that the 750 watt PSU you're looking at is probably major overkill. With that graphic card you could probably get away with a 350 watt PSU. I would aim for 500 to 600 watts. (thought I am quite noobish so if someone knows better I won't be offended if I get corrected)

There's a great power supply calculator at http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp. You plug in all your PC components and it calculates the minimum size PSU you need.

Thanks for the advice on the power supply overkill. On the calculator looks like I could come way down like you are saying ~ 400 or so.

The other thing that is confusing me is how to tell if the power supply offers the connections that I am going to need? Anybody have any advice on things that are essential / or good to have, or do most power supplies by default have what you need?

Anybody have other really reliable / quiet PSU recommendations? Seems like so many brands get tons of DOA feedback.

ThankS!

The chances are that any power supply will have far more connectors than you'll ever need, and not too few. Actually, if I was buying a new one today I might go for a modular power supply, in which only the bare essentials are hard wired and all the other cables are detachable. I have the Corsair 500R case which is pretty huge, but my power supply has so many unused cables dangling off it it's a struggle accomodating them all.
The only bummer is those modular PSUs cost about 20 bucks more than their hard wired equivalents.

As for picking the power you need, I wouldn't get the absolute minumum you can get away with. You might want to add something later and it would be absurd for your computer to start crashing just cos the PSU can't handle an extra hard drive...

I don't have any specific models in mind as I have only used one proper PSU and it's not very good. (Corsair Gaming Series 600W -- reliable but produces irritating noises. Perfect if you happen to be deaf.) The Corsair Enthusiast Series seems to be better - (??)

Places like Amazon are usually quite good at providing info, such as available connectors etc: (halfway down the page)
