i did the same, i also went to buy a wifi usb dongle to try getting it to work. still no luck. on high Sierra.

Yea, I don't think it's the usb BT dongle, I had it from the start, still had the issue. Wonder if it works on a real mac...

I had this issue. Installing the macOS combo update would temporarily bring AirDrop back, but it would inexplicably disappear on me again... I finally found the root of the problem. It was the Smalltree 10GBase-T network drivers I was using. I replaced my card with an AQC107 based card which uses patched drivers that are built-in to macOS and all my problems were resolved.
