hi people,

I am totally noob about building hackintosh thing, so i hope that you guys in this forum can help&give me some advice.
I plan to upgrade my late 2013 15’ MBP me664 because it is feel kinda slow now, so i think i should get a big leap of upgrade. Consodering original trash bin mac pro really expensive, i plan to build a custom hackin’ one.
My usage just for record,compose&mixing.
First of all now i still use Apogee Ensemble thunderbolt interface to my MBP for record & DA conversion and i plan not to replace it if later i run a custoMac.
For hardware things this is my list:
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD5 TH (because it has a build in Thunderbolt 3,maybe this board’s thunderbolt3 are intel certified too?)
CPU: intel i7 7700K
RAM: GSKILL TRIDENT Z DDR4 64gb (4x16) PC3466
HDD: Samsung 960 EVO NVMe M2 500gb (for OS,DAW,plugins&VstI installation) & 1 Samsung 850 EVO 4TB (for my sound sample library & project files)
VGA: maybe i will use on board since i totally don’t working video thing and graphics for DAW,plugins&vst instrument seems doesn’t need high horse power appeture.
PSU: Corsair RM650x
CPU cooler: Corsair H110 water cooling
Case: Corsair Carbide 300R
Audio interface: Apogee Ensemble thunderbolt (it has thunderbolt 2 data transfer,i own and use it for now, hopefully to use it with custoMac too)
Accessories: Startech thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 adapter (i read on this forum that it has more success conversion for thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 external device)
DAW: Presonus Studio One Professional 3.5.2 (this is i’m using now and want to use it later)
OS: Please advise me which version will run smooth for music production.

From what i read on this forum, our friend,Kitch, have a trouble when updating his controller firmware, this is his thread:
https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/apogee-control-with-ensemble-thunderbolt.228253/

I hope from my buying advice thread, we can also help Kitch, because me & him was at same audio interface system.

Please comment & i will be thankfull for your advise guys.

Regards,
Bobby

The GA-Z170X-UD5 does not have a Thunderbolt 3 port. The GA-Z270X-UD5 and the GA-Z170X-UD5 TH do have Thunderbolt 3 ports. Are you sure you want the GA-Z170X-UD5?

The build should be compatible. You will need High Sierra since you want to use a NVMe drive for the OS. However, there are 2 things to note :

(1) The Thunderbolt 3 hardware on the motherboard may need to be "activated" before it can be used. Check this post :
https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/...3-test-build-ga-z170x-ud5-th-i5-6600k.199242/

(2) A BIOS upgrade may be required for the motherboard to recognize the 7700K. Can you be certain that when you buy the motherboard the BIOS is already updated to the version required to recognize the 7700K? If not, you will have a problem as the motherboard may not recognize the CPU.

Hi @Jamesbond007
Thanks for your response.
Yes, i should read more on High Sierra installation and setup process because i’m totally noob on hackin’ thing haha...
For motherboard and other hardwares, i still dont buy because i am still reading till i understand to do hackintosh..., specs on my post just a plan to do beside i share and hopefully tonymacx86 forum member can give me advice if there any incompatibility.
And since my purpose to integrate the custoMacPro with my apogee ensemble thunderbolt audio interface (as you maybe know that apogee interface looks too picky for integrate with non-apple hardware) i should get good knowledge to do hackintosh thing.
Maybe other members can also discuss on my thread or @Kitchmusic thread (link above) in order to help us run our audio production system smoothly.

Hey! I know this is a bit of an old thread - just wondering how things went with your build, and if you're finding Studio One runs fine?
