I have Samsung U28D590 - it supports 60Hz - cost $599, and looks great!

However I have a GTX 650Ti (with no display port, only HDMI) showing up at 30Hz currently.

However it should be noted it does look super sharp (retina quality), and has minimal ghosting! It is hands down better than the Dell 28" 4K and Seiki 39" 4K displays I tested.

One day I would like to update to the GTX 760 or higher.

Same here.

I have an Samsung U28D590 28" 4K display that supports 60Hz at max resolution of 3840x2160. The Samsung U28D590 is the first available 4K display to support 4K resolutions on DisplayPort at 60Hz in Single Stream Transport (SST) mode. Therefore it should just work and in OS X 10.9.2 as well as 10.9.3 it does indeed just work.

I'm running the Samsung U28D590 on a Core i7 3930K / ASUS P9X79 Deluxe with GTX 670 and OS X 10.9.3. I also have two ASUS 27" 1920x1080 monitors on the DVI and HDMI ports respectively, although, I also had an additional monitor on the other DVI port briefly.

So there are no issues or oddities that I am aware of with this setup and it works very well.

The only odd thing is that the scaled option menu looks like what gabrieljsmith1 posted not what TonyMac posted. That is to say that there is no graphic image under the scaled options only numerical options. It works the same way though.

I also have the Samsung U28D590 28" 4K display which works fine over HDMI but when I boot with the Displayport via on board graphics HD4600 I get a system memory allocation error before I even get to Chimera.

Does the 4600 support that resolution at 60Hz ?

I believe it does via displayport 1.2

However I can't even boot via displayport and get it at 30hz. Just shows that message when I boot with displayport cable!

The specs for your board state :

1 x DisplayPort port, supporting a maximum resolution of 4096 x 2160 @ 24 Hz / 2560 x 1600 @ 60 Hz
Maybe start by dropping the resolution and then working upwards ?

I was reading the Anandtech link posted by TonyMac and it seems like there are some exclusions of Apple hardware with respect to 4K based on either hardware or performance concerns.

What definition are you using for your system? If possible use an nVidia or ATI video card that is known to support 4K at 60Hz. I'm not sure but I was getting the impression that you were running off of Intel iGPU.

Edit:

Even if Intel allows for 4K on their iGPU it doesn't mean Apple will allow it in OS X. Keep in mind that in OS X scaling the image is rendered at much higher resolution and the scaled which can cause performance concerns. If Apple is concerned about performance on some systems they may disallow.

The board and 4770k seem to support 3840x2160 at 60hz as it works when I boot into Windows 8.1, so it should work with OS X correct?

Well in theory yes. Maybe your system definition needs changing to that of a mac that supports these 4K displays ?

Thats what I would try next.

Mac Pro 6,1?

Is there anything I should know before changing to that system definition?

I would give it a go yep. I've not used it myself though so can not confirm if it will do the job or not. I think a few people have used it successfully though.
