I'm getting curious about 4x40S series and decided to take a look at whitelist strings present in F.31 BIOS. HP likes to include common base for many laptop families and activate only certain cards for the end product. For those willing to further study the device id's, list of BIOS modules included in my searches are as follow:

233DF097-3218-47B2-9E09-FE58C2B20D22_2_1279.ROM
3BC42C6D-ABEC-41BA-8CCB-D8E0EF1CEF85_2_657.ROM

I identified following devices

Heh, this is not so good news. None of this will work with OS X (except maybe the Broadcom card, but I really doubt about it).
What about AR9285 from our 4530S Probook? People with 4x40S claim that can use it with simple card swap?
I couldn't find our DeviceID 168C:002B 103C:1461 anywhere in the *.ROM files to prove this claim.

I don't think that claim has been proven yet... Not that I've seen anyway. Looks like Mad_Sunday is going to prove/disprove it for us: http://www.tonymacx86.com/hp-probook/69284-atheros-ar9485-driver-2.html#post533400
I see, thanks

I was thinking about this post from 4540S main thread

Wireless: Changed to ar9285
Works wifi ar9285 inet connected normally

that's what puzzles me.

Do you remember the whitelist in our ProBooks? There was a Broadcom 43224 in this list and yet, I tested few cards with this chip (all of them HP-branded and with the same IDs as the IDs in this list) but I didn't manage to make any of them to work. I think you also tested a card with this chip. Also, the Broadcom 4313 card is in our whitelists too, but you will not find any info on the HP's site that this card actually works with ProBook 4x30.

Yes, I do remember http://www.tonymacx86.com/hp-probook-4530s/47361-4530s-wifi-whitelist.html

This time is little different. They don't seem to include any extra inactive cards and whitelisted BCM4313 is actually listed in the manual as a valid card. Too bad it's not supported in OS X

It's not so bad - BCM4313 is a piece of crap. This chip is based on very old N specification (probably kind of pre-N) and it works only at 72 Mbps max. So, it's not a big deal it's not supported on OS X.

For the record:
I can confirm that as F.32, whitelist is not being enforced on 4540S. It exists but at this moment it used only for displaying FCC ID
I've tried numerous cards from Intel, Broadcom and Atheros. All of them passed the boot process. When F1 is pressed to display system information
"Test WLAN" message appears with off shelf card.
