Ok all, I have a great daily machine with an i5 4690K OC'd which works well for everything it does.. except it's far slower in rendering video in FCPX than my 27" 5K iMac at work (i5 processor). So I'm looking to get into a either a new build or used Mac Pro for this specific task, and sell off my Z97 build.

For home, I'm debating on buying a 2009 iMac and upgrading it with dual x5690 Xeons and adding an RX580 (Real Mac)

or

Building a completely new setup from scratch with the 8700K and RX580. (Hackintosh)

A new setup will cost significantly more than buying a used Mac Pro ($500) and upgrading to x5690s ($250)

I'm a photographer and a content creator for my company so FCPX is the primary use of my next system.

Will the 8700K be faster in FCPX than dual x5690s?

Edit: This is more of a use-case scenario rather than a cutting edge, enthusiast scenario.

Dual x5690's passmark score at 14030 and a 8700k passmarks at 16153 so based on the number alone, yes an 8700k will be faster, not the mention you have access to far more PCIe lanes with this newer CPU and a new motherboard, there really is little to compare against the old x5690 tech.

2009 iMac is not compatible with 10.13 and it can't use dual CPUs so I assume you're talking about the Mac Pro.

If it helps, see screen shot.

The biggest problem with the Mac Pro is storage. The built-in SATA is slow (SATA II). The fastest disk you can put on it is an AHCI based M.2 SSD that can be used for boot up. You'd need to add a USB3 card and an external RAID for work files. Nothing will slow you down more than a slow disk.

Excellent. Thanks for the input. If anyone has any opposing thoughts, please let me know. Otherwise I’ll keep on the 8700K path. Thanks again

Thanks. A 5,1 firmware upgrade will allow the 2009 Mac Pro to run High Sierra (but who knows about future MacOS iterations). I thought about the PCI bandwidth but for this specific use, rendering times are my issue.. my videos typically have a final size of 4GB or less so the data speeds aren’t as much of an issue as one might think.

I’m going forward with 8700K build unless someone else suggests otherwise with a viable reason not to. Thanks!

Do some research on how well dual graphics cards work for FCPX on a hack. I don't know if it's as easy as it is on a Mac Pro.

Will do. Honestly my goal is to render videos much faster than my 4690k/980ti setup and noticeably faster than my 27” iMac at work (has r390 I think?). I know FCPX does miles better with AMD.. if it’s feasible to run 2 RX580s on a hack, I’ll end up going that route.

Next question is, dual rx580 or Vega 64?

The performance will be vary similar. I picked a 2010 Mac Pro on eBay for $600 and then upgraded the processors to 2 x 3.46. I use it for render box for Cinema 4D. Cinebench is just a shade of 1600. If you look at Cinbench scores for the 8700k, it is very similar. OCed it may reach about 1700. I have about $1000-1050 in my Mac Pro and I just picked up a GTX 670 for $66.

Here are benchmarks. Cinebench 15, Geekbench 3 and 4. Its a pretty fast system for $1000.
