I just spent a few hours playing with my 2009 Mac Pro after installing a RX 580 and Mojave. I have to say, I am still impressed. Specifications:
  • 2 x 6 core Xeons running at 2.66Ghz
  • 128GB of RAM
  • MSI single fan RX 580
  • 256 GB boot drive (AHCI 2280 SSD)
  • 512 GB SATA SSD
  • 4 x 4GB SSHD in
  • Sonnet 4 port USB 3.0 (pro) card
This Mac is nearly 10 years old and it runs SMOOTH with Mojave. If I had bought it in this configuration in 2009, it would have been roughly a $10,000 purchase. Since I bought it used, I've got roughly $4000 into it. Either way it's cost over amortized over it's lifetime is less than $100 per month. That kind of ROI on computer hardware is very rare.

One surprise -- The W7000 card (available used for $260 on Amazon) seems to be more stable and have fewer stalls than the RX580. the W7000 "feels" like it plays Starcraft 2 at 4k on high settings better than the RX580 using Metal API
