Comments

My old 32-bit macmini1.1 was near to useless given it's obsolete OS; applications such as Chrome and iphoto no longer worked. I wanted a "sure thing" build with very little issues. This build is far more powerful machine than I thought it would be.

On the PSU, I over-built the system by 100%. I could have done with a 60W PSU and much smaller power brick. At t this point,I can add a DVD drive and full 3.5" large format drive with the power reserve I have.

What worked out of the box -> using on-board graphics to drive two monitors. simply amazing
  • boots, stable (boot time ~ 30 seconds). The two second weird screen noise as others describe occurs about 20 seconds in. Same thing happens when wake from sleep
  • sleep (including sound after wake from sleep). Selecting iMac14,2 in the system ID was critical here
  • Gig Ethernet
  • wifi (with new Atheros half height mini PCi card; as expected, the motherboard Intel wireless did not work)
  • iTunes (sync, purchase)
  • iphoto (version 9.6; had to delete the user plug-in directory to stop iphoto from crashing)
  • imovie (just works)
  • MS Office 2011 with latest updates
  • Chrome (still the Yosemite Helper app not responding bit)
  • Macports - no issues. just works
  • Plex media server
  • File server over AFP and SMB
  • Contacts
  • VNC server

Untested
  • HDMI audio

Looks good! Thank you for posting this! I am working on a similar build in a few days. I haven't built a Hackintosh since 2012 so this was a nice little refresher.

I was curious about which system definition to use. I thought I might use a Mac Mini system definition since the motherboard was listed under "CustoMac Mini." I noticed that Haswell iMacs and Mac Minis did not use i3 processors (only i5 and i7) so I was confused on which system definition to use.

You and many others have had success with iMac14,2 so I think I will use that!

I should have looked into the wifi card that you bought since it is very inexpensive rather than splurging and buying the TP Link that costs $30.

Thanks again for this post!
