Hi all,

Some time ago a user from cubeowner.com recommended me this DC-DC converter.

It has the same connector as the original G4 Cube and accepts a variable input (18V-28V) so it should allow the use of the original G4 Cube power brick with mobos using a 12V input (i.e: Haswell NUC).

So this should be an excellent option for those wanting to retain as much as possible from the original Cube.

The Pico referred to in the first post doesn't seem to be available anymore.

So, if anyone is trying to find just the connector part in panel mount form - so that for instance you can connect the original Cube power brick to a different wide range input PicoPsu - then I believe the part numbers you should look for are: KPJX-PM-4S (unshielded version) or KPJX-PM-4S-S (shielded version). These are available quite cheaply in the UK from Toby Electronics (www.toby.co.uk) or in the US from Mouser. I have a few on order so will confirm if they fit correctly soon!

An advantage of using this type of connector over the usual sort supplied with PicoPSUs is that the contacts are rated at 7.5Amps each. Use 2 contacts for positive and 2 contacts for negative and total current pass through this connector (as long as you use appropriate wires) inside the Cube is therefore up to 15Amps. So dependent on the voltage of the power brick you can achieve some safe high power supplies to your Cube. For example - if your power brick is 12volts, the peak power the connector can pass gives up to 12 x 15 = 180Watts or for a 24Volt power brick - 24 x 15 = 360Watts. High power 12volt bricks are not really available, but if you went the 24volt brick route then the story is different with things like this readily available.

I am intending to use the KPJX-PM-4S-S connector together with the Cube power brick and one of these 250W units in a new no cut Cube mod soon. Remember to design your mod so that the weakest component in the chain is not going to explode or cause a problem - so in my case as the original G4 Cube power brick supplies 190 Watts max @ 28 volts I'll look to run my mod at about 150 Watts max or so to give the components a bit of headroom.....and if it is all happy at that level then I might just swap out the PSU for the eBay one linked above for a while. ( :) )

A no cut Cube made by Minihack? That's excellent news!! Can't wait to see what you have in mind.

I ended up choosing these two parts:

I still need the proper wires (and some free time :problem: ) to implement it.

Ahh, that is a good part. My power sockets arrived today and I confirm too that they do fit the Cube power brick perfectly. In fact it looks like exactly the same part as you got from Minibox (the 4 pin miniDIN part) but without the end adapter.

For this project I am hoping that some prototype parts I have designed to replace the inner cage will be arriving on my doorstep soon and then the fun can start properly.
