Hi all,

I have built 50+ Custom Macs (1366 & 1155 chipsets) since 2010. However, this is my first venture into the 2011/X79 platform. I was commissioned by a world renowned advertising photographer to build this insane computer for heavy/intense graphics work. His current setup wasn't performing to his liking. It took 3:40 to open a 12GB image in Photoshop, and 6 minutes to save that same file. This is/was totally unacceptable for his busy workflow. He wanted speeds of at least 3 times faster, so I proposed this build.

Side note: This is the first time I've ever seen such large 2D image files. They're using some pretty expensive, cutting edge equipment at his studio!

He provided me with a 12GB image file on a flash drive, along with a large check to begin ordering the components for the build. I ordered everything needed, and the remaining shipments are scheduled to arrive in 3 days. While waiting on the parts, I copied his 12GB file to my "Mac" (GA-Z68-UD3H-B3 mobo, i7 2600K CPU [OC'd to 4.4GHz], SL 10.6.8, 32GB 1333MHz RAM, 240GB Mushkin SSD [OS Drive], 60GB Mushkin [Win7 Drive]. It took 1:10 to open the file, and 2:22 to save it to the Win7 drive. That's nearly 3 x as fast right there! At that point, I was happy to know that this new build should cut those times in half, especially since my OS has no TRIM support and my SSDs' speeds are not what they should be.

I'm planning on setting up a RAID0/striped array (2 x 512GB SSD) on the board's 6GB/s (GSata) connectors, to satisfy my client's request of 1TB of fast workspace drives.

The third 512GB Vector SSD will be the system drive, and the 2TB spindle HDD will backup all drives (system & both SSD RAID0 arrays).

I got the H100i because I want to try to get at least 4.4GHz out of the 3930K. The Dynex firewire card has always served me well on other builds, so I stuck with it. I chose the IOGEAR GBU521 after researching this site for best Bluetooth compatibility. The GPU is what was requested, as was the 64GB RAM.

Installation Instructions

First and foremost: This installation guide is based on Ziglen's guide to a similar build (with slight modifications). His guide can be found here: http://www.tonymacx86.com/user-buil...ga-x79-ud5-4gb-ram-evga-geforce-gt-640-a.html

1. Edit motherboard bios similar to this" http://www.tonymacx86.com/99-quick-guide-configuring-uefi-gigabyte-s-7-series-lga-1155-boards.html
NOTE: If overclocking, change your multiplier to 44 (4.4GHz), and your vcore to 1.290.

2. Get access to another mac and download Mountain Lion from the App Store, and make a Unibeast bootable USB drive (at least 8GB required).
a) Download 10.8.3 combo update from: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1640, and put it on your Unibeast drive.
b) Download all files attached to this (original) post, and create a folder on your Unbeast drive to put them in (for later installations).
c) Unzip & run the "ShowAllFiles" application so you can see the files on your USB/Unibeast drive.
d) Unzip "X79-UD5 USB Boot drive update".
e) Place the "org.chameleon.Boot.plist" into the Extra folder on your USB/Unibeast drive (overwrite or delete the one already there - make a backup of that one if you wish). Authenticate as necessary.
f) Place the "SleepEnabler.kext" into the Extra/Extensions folder on your USB/Unibeast drive.
Now your ready for installation of Mountain Lion without the need for special tags at the Unibeast screen.

3. Boot from the "USBHDD" by pressing F12 rapidly until you come to the boot screen in the bios. Select "USBHDD"
a) Install Mountain Lion and reboot. Make sure to boot from the "USBHDD" again by pressing F12.
b) Install combo update 10.8.3. DON'T REBOOT AFTER UPDATE.

2. Unzip my attached "X79-UD5 Put in Extra folder.zip" file. Copy it's contents into the Extra folder (found in your OS/system drive's root - if it's not there, create it).

3. Run MultiBeast 5.2.1 and tick the following boxes:

MultiBeast Configuration for Mountain Lion

attachment.php

It might be necessary to re-copy the "org.chameleon.Boot.plist" file from "X79-UD5 Put in Extra folder.zip" back into the Extra folder if Multibeast changed it. In my case, it remained unchanged.

You will need to edit the "org.chameleon.Boot.plist" with Textedit changing:

<string>PCIRootUID=1 npci=0x3000</string>
to
<string>PCIRootUID=1 acpi=off npci=0x3000 darkwake=0</string>

4) Unzip Lorengrin's "Kexts X79-UD5.zip" file. Place the contents onto your desktop.

5) Unzip & Run "KextBeast" to install Lorengrin's Kext files.

6) Unzip "Bluetooth Kext.zip" file. Place the edited "IOBluetoothFamily.kext" file on your desktop (making sure that it's the only .kext file on the desktop). Grab "IOBluetoothFamily.kext" from S/L/E and either delete it, or save it somewhere safe (other than the desktop). Use "KextBeast" to install the edited "IOBluetoothFamily.kext" file that you placed on the desktop.

7) Reboot.

That's it. If your system is like mine you should now be up & running 100%!

Audio is working at the front and back of the computer!
Note: The only oddity is that the audio ports on the front panel of the case are reversed, but work well (ie: input is output and vice versa). No biggie.

Sleep works too!

Another oddity happens when you power the computer on. It doesn't boot until you press the "reset" button (next to "power" button). I wait a few seconds (until I hear the fans spin down slightly), before pressing the reset. After that, I get the Gigabyte splash screen and it boots like normal. Again, no biggie at all. :)

I ran Geekbench and scored 19,762 @ 4.4GHz (1.290 vcore) http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench2/1827860

attachment.php

Also, here's an update for speed of opening and saving the same 12GB image file in Photoshop from the striped RAID0 arrays:

Open 12GB Image: 0:49
Save 12GB Image: 1:10

Not what I hoped for, but good enough for my client's needs. :)

So you have a UP4 or UD4? I believe UD4 has different audio.

It´s an UP4 (sorry for wrong spelling) the audio should is Realtek ALC892 (High Defenition)
Have probably tried wrong kexts (for wrong ALC898).
Looks like you need to be a proffessor to edit a DSDT file from another guide.
Realy wish there were a more simple solution...

thanks
