Had the same result when trying to install the latest Java update.

Here's what I did:

Installed 10.8.3 from the combo update.

Rebooted, ran into the problem many others were having, fixed it with this:
http://www.tonymacx86.com/os-x-updates/92678-10-8-3-can-no-longer-boot.html#post568405

Now my boot hangs at the apple logo.

See the attached screenshots for the -v output. I get a different result whether or not I do "GraphicsEnabler=no -v" or just "-v" by itself. Safe Mode (-x) works all the time.

10.8.2 works flawlessly on my setup... luckily I made a SuperDuper! clone before installing the update(s)!

Any ideas?

Same symptoms with a Z77 Extreme 4 and GTX 580 here. No solutions yet, hope somebody finds something.

I have same board with i3-3225. Have seen nearly identical boot screens, with hangs just after some audio loads and the unknown CPU 0x3a message. Clearly there's an issue with a Logitech device, probably a USB something, so disconnecting that may help.

At one point I had a VoodooHDA kext that was not needed that caused a big problem - if you have Voodoo kext(s) try dumping them.

It may be that removing the AppleHDA kexts would help, and it may help to remove the ALC8xx kext(s) if any. I still don't have working audio, so I'm using an iMic USB sound "card" -- works well.

I'm pretty sure it was audio kexts that hung my system, but I can't prove it, becuase when I've gotten a hang that resolves, the boot goes so fast I can't see the hang point. Don't know if looking at the log files can help once you boot into safe mode, but it can't hurt to look.

i did remove the Logitech driver (for my mouse) and the AppleHDA kext. I don't have any voodoo installed. I will try deleting the ALC kexts to see if that makes a difference. Thanks!

I'm fairly certain I'm having the exact same issue. hangs just after the audio shows up on the verbose boot screen. I let it sit there for a while and went back and checked the system log.

23:30:31 was the last timestamp of the boot. Its definitely getting farther than the verbose boot screen leads on. Still don't get why its hanging but my money is not on the audio drivers. It was hanging at DSMOS has arrived on my before I installed my realtek audio stuff.

It was about that point that I changed the MultiBeast Sys Def to iMac 13,1 and used EasyBeast instead of User/No DSDT. One of the forum mods also suggested trying the latest Macmini Sys Def in MB. But the iMac worked for me. I didn't load any other drivers at that point, and the system booted with no flags and I had HD4000 graphics at 1920x1080 thru HDMI cable -- I didn't have any grphx card plugged in.

Forgive me for forgetting to add the most important thing -- I was trying to install over 10.6.8-- that was a bad idea. I finally did a clean install of ML and used the EasyBeast setup and that's when everything started to work right. Then I used Migration Assistant to move the setting and files. But I've also found from reading posts here that every install is different in some way.

What worked for me was safe booting and removing the new Intel HD graphics kexts from S/L/E on somebody else's suggestion.
