My very first MacPro case mod

Perhaps but they are old and they do blow up more and more often. My old 3,1 is sitting in the back of the bike shed with one of its memory controllers blown. At this stage I'm unsure whether I'll ever get around to fitting out the case with shiny new bits or whether it'll get cut up to make...

Apple Previews macOS 11.0 Big Sur - Available Fall 2020

What I am used to serves me very well indeed - the MacPro 5,1 I have is a much better Windows machine than the similar spec'd dell it replaced and it means I don't need a dedicated Mac in that office. Sometimes the tail wags the dog but whatever way the bits are arranged, the wagging is probably...

Apple Previews macOS 11.0 Big Sur - Available Fall 2020

Office is an irrelevant corpse from a bygone era. It's not what people partition up discs and spend aeons installing and maintaining Windows on their precious Macbook Pros and twenty-something inch i7 iMacs for. I keep a dedicated MP 5,1 with W7 primarily for Solidworks.

Apple Previews macOS 11.0 Big Sur - Available Fall 2020

Bootcamp is quite important to a lot of people these days and I wonder how much Microsoft see that too. What about the chances of Windows tracking apple hardware to preserve this option?

There's a fundamental limitation of touchscreen type interfaces with professional desktop computers: reaching the screen.

Apple Previews macOS 11.0 Big Sur - Available Fall 2020

"Surely it's just a matter of..." said the marketing executive to me many years ago. Since then I've always regarded it as an indication that the speaker doesn't understand much about what they're talking about. WIMP is dead; surely it's just a matter of using an entirely different interaction...

Apple Previews macOS 11.0 Big Sur - Available Fall 2020

Ah, nonsense is not new and neither is backtracking on stupid mistakes. Apple have a lot of experience of both. The ARM thing is different and was only a matter of time. Part of the swings and roundabouts of getting old. Anyway, it might put the latest cheesegrater within my reach sooner rather...

What's the oldest computer you use on a regular basis?

Another one bites the dust. My 8600/250 just died. Power supply, I think. I used it mainly to move things between the network and 800k floppies for my old SE. It also occasionally demonstrated Rhapsody to visitors.

    Your First Computer

We had a Mac SE at home around 1988-89 but things got tight and it was sold while it was still worth something. I managed to re-acquire one about ten years ago. The first machine I bought myself was a second-hand Quadra 840AV in early 1995.

    Mac Pro 3,1 GPU Upgrades?

My GTX 760 powerleads arrived and it didn't work straight away in the MacPro so I just stuck it in my GA-Z77/3770k Kraken and used the GTX660ti from it in the MacPro 3,1. The Mac booted first time and runs really well with it; a quick bake in Blender is now really a quick bake! It was a bit slow...

    NeXTStation

I'm still thinking in very general terms. This was a very expensive machine when it was new and I think the finished Hack should reflect that. Having said that, I don't need it to be a very powerful machine. Finish will be paramount and I want to keep my options open for further rebuilds. Yes...

    Bash/Shellshock vulnerability in hackintosh

Bash is not really what I'd call a system file and it doesn't 'come' from Apple anyway.

    Mac Pro 3,1 GPU Upgrades?

I've gotten a GTX 760 that will either go into the Kraken or my MacPro 3,1. I'm waiting on some power leads.

What I have to work with... For those of you unfamiliar with the NeXT, the casing is a die-cast magnesium alloy.

    NeXTStation

I'm cleaning out a disused work area in my office and I've pulled out a dead NeXTStation slab. I love my old NeXTs to bits and I'd love to have an everyday reason to clackle that classic keyboard. There's about 370 x 320 available for the computer by about 50mm tall (the top surface of the...

What's the oldest computer you use on a regular basis?

I've just acquired a really clean aircooled dual core G5 to take over running my legacy software so I'm packing up my 8600. It also ran my old SCSI scanner which I've just replaced too. I've had since 1997 and it's my last Beige computer. End of an era. (edit: Had an "Error Type 10" during the...
