You can actually improve the battery life quite a lot by undervolting the cpu. My battery life for coding on medium brightness is about 4 to 5 hours.

I have experienced similar behaviour after waking from sleep. The "solution" for me was to switch to igfx in BIOS before using mac and only switching back to SG when using windows.

The NVRAM seems to work, at least the variables that I store with sudo nvram test=1234 stay after reboot.
