Do you have everything checked under Energy Saver? If that doesn't work, download 10.6.3 Sleepenabler, throw it in your E/E folder, run Kext Utility, and reboot.

Did you try connecting via HDMI while the computer is off, then booting into Mac OS? I can't even connect my HDMI via Mini Displayport on my Macbook Pro, without crazy stuff happening.
