Thanks for the tip. I had the same issue after updating my bios (Asus Z270 Prime-A 0900). Went back to SMBios 14.1 and CSM On. Nvidia drivers load fine now for my GTX 1080ti. Thanks.
I own a Asus z270 Prime-A with Realtek S1220A (1220). After so many hours testing different methods, I tried yours and it works! As noted elsewhere in the thread, I changed audio to 7 to make it work. It's not perfect : headphones are not recognized. But for now i'll settle with it.

I have a 4790k with a GTX 980 ti. I booted with clover adding nv_disable=1 on the first boot. Then i installed the nvidia drivers for my current version of el capitan and bang! That was it. Hope that helps.
