    Apple Mac at 40

I particularly enjoyed re-reading the original Rolling Stone article written in 1984. The Birth of the Mac: Rolling Stone’s 1984 Feature on Steve Jobs and his Whiz Kids...

Very High Voltage everything is set to Auto in bios.

All of those numbers look normal to me. > My cpu voltage is very high. When it is on idle the voltage is around > 0.7V and on stress tests they are 1.212V. This is Intel SpeedSteep. When the processor runs in a high performance state for an extended period of time the voltage is...

    Reading unread posts?

After the site / forum style updates earlier this week, is there a way to read unread posts? This used to be accessible from the front page. Perhaps I am just being dense, but now I can't seem to find this anywhere. (Using Firefox...)

    Soldering station

A minor clarification... By "heavy metal wire" I meant like 00 gauge (double zero) 10mm in diameter, stuff you would use for arc welding. :) Anything you are working on with protoboards will be fine with 50-80w, but if you try to solder car battery cables, you'll need a bigger iron.

    Soldering station

If you are working on electronics and plan to invest some time and effort, get a low-cost temperature controlled unit like a Weller WES51 plus a few small conical replacement tips. This should cost about $100 or less. If you are comparing irons, look at the "working distance" from the grip...

hdmi cable = smoke from power supply

The main concern in any of these cables (USB, HDMI, DVI, VGA) is just the outer ground shield which can carry a lot of current if you have a fault somewhere in your AC wiring. If you've got a voltmeter, you can try plugging the cable in on one end, then at the other end leave it unplugged...

hdmi cable = smoke from power supply

I recommend you get a 3-prong outlet tester and check all of your outlets. Or see if you can find a knowledgeable friend to help you check them with a voltmeter. If you have hot and neutral swapped on an outlet and/or unconnected safety ground, you may be shorting hot to ground when you connect...
