ATI Raedeon HD 6870 seen as RaedeonHD NI40 on 10.6.8

Yes it can matter if its reporting as NI40. Certain apps do not function correctly. I believe the App Store itself doesn't for some.

    Yes this works fine.

ATI Raedeon HD 6870 seen as RaedeonHD NI40 on 10.6.8

Don't forget, you will most likely need "active" DP adapters like this one, unless your monitor has DP ports: http://www.amazon.com/Accell-B087B-006B ... 127&sr=8-5 The "passive" ones from Apple surprisingly did seem to work for me, but also was disabling some of my other ports in the process...

ATI Raedeon HD 6870 seen as RaedeonHD NI40 on 10.6.8

Yes, I was also able to use 1 DVI, 1 HDMI, 1 DP as well. You just can't use the second DVI port.

OSX Lion: Energy Saver, Mouse Won't Wake

This is a new "feature" of Lion so you can't accidentally wake your screen by bumping your mouse. I think it should be an option though. I prefer mouse move for wake from screen shut off and button key for wake from sleep.

ATI Raedeon HD 6870 seen as RaedeonHD NI40 on 10.6.8

Yeah, it hits CPU way too much. Know of a better GPU test for OSX?

LOL, yeah, poor OSX.. got a 75 FPS in Windows

ATI Raedeon HD 6870 seen as RaedeonHD NI40 on 10.6.8

Yeah, I just ran it and it did max out 1 CPU core during the test. I will try in Windows in a moment for comparison. It wouldn't completely surprise me if GPU performance is a lot higher in Windows though. Common complaint with OSX.

Can you say specifically which "native" resolution is working? It may just be that they are using a resolution that is one of the ones you can use without any problem like 1600x1200, which is great if you don't have a widescreen monitor that most of us do.

ATI Raedeon HD 6870 seen as RaedeonHD NI40 on 10.6.8

That does seem off if you are running a 6870. For reference, my Cinebench OpenGL rating in OSX with a 6870 is 41.78 FPS.

Ah ok, makes sense. I also develop iOS apps, but use OSX as my primary OS most of the time unless I am gaming, so having everything run at its very best is key to me. I actually bought a 6950 first, but then returned it and got a 6870 for now. I will probably get a 6970 as soon as Apple...

I don't know about you all, but in large part the very reason I built a hackintosh to begin with was so that I could get great performance without paying triple the cost for a real Mac Pro. It makes no sense to me to find workarounds to get unsupported cards to run barely acceptable. That's...

I haven't installed my second card yet, but yes, that is my understanding, from reading others that have done it.

I am doing a CrossFireX with 2x6870's. Great for gaming in Windows, and full support for single card in OSX. I think it's best of both worlds for the moment. I would prefer 2x6970's though =) Depending on what rez you are running though, 6870 is a great card though unless you are going to...

If I can't get native resolution (1920x1200) then I consider it broken/unusable. I was not able to. LCDs look horrible at non-native rez. Also performance was so bad that I also consider that unusable for me. Maybe some people are ok with it =)

6970 = limited, not accelerated. 6950 = no. Same on Lion. IMO 6870 is best hackintosh GPU at the moment, until Apple updates drivers.

That's the rumors and makes sense because its one of the only things Apple has left to upgrade to thunderbolt and probably the device and users that need it the most.

Yeah limited 6970 support has been known, but no 6950, and as you found out its not very good support. I still think our best bet on proper drivers is when the new Mac Pro's launch next month. Til then I will stick to my 6870 that works perfectly =)

Sorry for the late reply, I believe any 6870 should work fine including the OC cards. I personally got this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004O0OKXK because of good user reviews and it's quiet.
