@andomar, thanks for the suggestion. Disabling iGPU in BIOS does indeed allow iMovie to open properly... However, now I am back to being unable to open .jpg files in either quick look or Preview which is even worse. This problem was previously solved by enabling the iGPU in BIOS. :crazy...
