Well its a relief to know it can be done. I'm using a Sandisk 32gb Ultra usb3 for this, which boots my Carbon Copy Cloner backup image. This works at high speed even on usb2. Well, in comparison to my 32gb Lexar usb2 stick anyway. I also have a 64gb Sandisk Extreme usb3. So I should be covered...

Is it possible to do a Yosemite install to a usb stick, so I can test everything is working before committing to a hard drive install? I tried it on a 32gb usb 3 stick earlier, but it wouldn't boot. But from what I've been reading, this may be more to do with the usb 3 stick than the software...

So does this only work with graphics card hdmi? My previously working Gigabyte Z77 HD3000 hdmi audio output has stopped working after moving up to 10.10.2 so I was hoping this might be a quick fix.

Okay, I had this problem myself and it was driving me nuts. It turned out that I should've been installing fake smc at multibeast stage. I had avoided easybeast when running multibeast but it turns out that it sorted most of my problems out. I would also install the acpi rollback as well.

I'm wondering the same thing as the OP. I've already downloaded CCC but I'm not sure how it works. I'f I make a "clone" is it an exact image of my OSX drive? And how do I restore it if things go pear shaped?

So I downloaded the latest (10.10.2) OSX installer from app store yesterday as the update was bricking my installation. I created a new installation usb stick and went through the installation as normal. Then when I run Multibeast and use exactly the same settings as before, OSX won't boot...

Absolutely 100% with the FakeSMC. If I could, I would kiss you :D If only guides would include this sort of information then clampetts like me wouldn't be getting our panties in a bunch.
