I got the same problem. on Imac under Maverik each time I try to download from App store High Sierra, it downloads a 21Mo file.

my works perfectly ! do you use hdmi or DVi screen? vga is not supported on OSX, insatallation will give you a black screen! and verbose mode will show few install lines and then fail !! but it works in bios menu ;)

El capitan installed now. I just used a diferent usb stick. Once ejected (not the EFI) I log out and remove the USB stick from the computer.
