I took the plunge to Catalina yesterday and had the same issue with audio. Updated the Lilu and ALC, and followed the terminal commands here in Post 22.

Unable to get any backlight controls or the slider to appear. Installed High Sierra 10.13.6 on Dell Inspiron n5010 with Intel HD Arrandale graphics.
Installed applebacklightfixup.kext to ~/Library/Extensions
Installed SSDT-PNLF.aml to ACPI/Patched folder.

I did a clean install with 10.12 the other day. Everything seems to be working so far (iMessage, sleep, usb) except for sound which I haven't set up yet.
Toleda has posted a really good instruction set over on Github for enabling audio including HDMI audio using a ssdt with clover. You can also do it with an ssdt.

I ended doing a clean install with clover to fix iMessage. I agree Clover is super easy to configure. Can't tell a speed difference with UEFI but overall I'm pleased.
In case anyone is interested in upgrading to 10.9.2, I just did it and it went well except for one hiccup.
