How Does The Booting Mechanism Work?

C'mon, guys, I know that someone knows how booting works! I need to understand. The first step in solving a problem is understanding it. Without knowing how the booting mechanism works, and its limitations, I can not solve the kernel panics I get when switching to another boot volume. Someone...

How Does The Booting Mechanism Work?

How does the booting mechanism work? What's going on "behind the scenes"? As a Mac user, I have always had multiple bootable drives in my tower Macs. Switching to a different boot drive was as easy as using the Startup Disk control panel or holding [Option] at boot to select a temporary...

    Gigabyte 8-Series Motherboard UEFI Updates - 2014/01/24

I’m normally a Mac user so flashing BIOS is new to me. My GA-Z87X-UD5H was at F8 but became corrupted and reverted to F5 by itself. Now I'm trying to get it to the latest F9 but cannot. Running Q-Flash from BIOS tells me that that I need a "later version" of the flash utility. I've...

    Hot Swap Impossible?

Judging by the lack of responses, I'm assuming that true hot swap is in fact not possible on a Hackintosh.

    Hot Swap Impossible?

I enabled the "hot-plug" option for the hot swap cage drives in BIOS.

    Recovery

FWIW, in case this is still an issue for you, as a Mac guy I have always had multiple bootable drives. Long before Apple started putting a Recovery HD partition on their drives, I was keeping at least one other bootable drive in my tower Macs. I typically have different OS versions on each, in...

    Hot Swap Impossible?

My build includes a three-bay hot swap cage that accepts bare SATA drives. My workflow is such that I swap drives a lot. I have set the ports for the three hot swap bays to permit "hot-plug" in BIOS. The default 3rd party SATA kext does not make the "hot-plug" drives ejectable. I can still...

    USB Installer Won't Boot

Actually, a correction is needed. This error is not a result of trying to boot to the USB drive. It occurs on every boot if the USB drive is present. I do not have to be (attempting) booting to the USB drive.

    Changing Just One Driver

This worked to replace the kext but this results in its own problems. I wanted the drives in the hot swap cage ejectable and this was accomplished. The 3rd party eSATA kext makes ALL drives ejectable (except the boot drive), not just the ones with the hot-plug option enabled in BIOS. And, once...

    USB Installer Won't Boot

Did that but still get errors when attempting boot to a USB drive: EBIOS read error: Error 0x31 Block 0x0 Sectors 0 This is repeated four times.

    Changing Just One Driver

That may make minimal changes but it does not change just the one driver. There are certain minimum things that MultiBeast does and I've no guarantee that one of them isn't changing something that is perfectly fine on my existing boot drive. Nonetheless, last night I tried exactly this against...

    USB Installer Won't Boot

Thanks, I'll take a look in about an hour when the drive cloning I have going on now is done.

    USB Installer Won't Boot

Might those be the five "Generic STORAGE DEVICE 0551" listings I see in my boot select list? Except in the boot order organizer, I have not seen them elsewhere in the BIOS. How does one change them to CD ROM?

    USB Installer Won't Boot

Yes, I do. A USB3 reader is built in.

    USB Installer Won't Boot

Apparently, it will, 'cause that's what's been happening here. Having corrected the partition type, when I try to boot to it now I get an "EBIOS" error. a 031, I think.

    Changing Just One Driver

I need to change the SATA driver to the third party eSATA driver. I don't need to change anything else. This will get hot swap working for the three-drive hot swap cage I have installed. I determined this by starting with a fresh OS X install and using that eSATA driver and booting to it. Now I...

i have a USB card reader in one of the 5.25 bays and it's plugged into a MoBo USB 3 header. Always has been though, even when this build was not crashing on start. The only other USB devices are a keyboard and mouse plugged into ports on the rear. Hold on... Well, that's interesting. I...
