I've been using a 2tb USB backup drive for my macos and it's been working fine. it's been some time since I used it, but now suddenly macos (mojave) is not recognizing it.
I've tried running diskutil activity to monitor to see if there's anything going on. nothing.
I've rebooted into windows...
Since this is happening again, I'm listing the steps here just in case.
How to reset the printing system on your Mac
Click on the Apple menu icon.
Click on System Preferences.
Click Printers & Scanners.
Right or control-click in the list of devices on the left side of the window.
After some search on the IODisplayWrangler, it seemed that wasn't the issue. However, I found others had had this sudden problem and fixed it by resetting the printer. I reset the printer following these steps: https://www.imore.com/how-reset-printing-system-your-mac
and now it works again...

pmset -g live did not show anything preventing the machine from sleep. Nor does Activity Monitor in the "preventing sleep" column.
I'm not able to boot in safe mode, so I can't use that to check if anything else is interfering.

I've done no modification to the system for a long time. No changes to bios, no changes to the OS (haven't done any updates because there's some issue).
