    G4 MDD Freenas

A small bit of hair ripping later, and. WIFI isn't ideal for moving DATA around but here at my mother's there is no other choice. Thankfully time I do have.

    G4 MDD Freenas

Done. I installed FreeNAS last night. I had to remove the RAID card for now because you can't boot from it in JBOD so it was freezing at the drive detection bit. FreeNAS is on, but it wants a network cable plugged in to continue and that's a problem right now. Might try and cobble...

    Top done.

    G4 MDD Freenas

Session of suck, part two. Sadly for me there is going to be a part 3. The sodding handles. They too need the same treatment, but are much much smaller (thank the lord). I won't bother much with the bottom feet because they will be on carpet so will turn grey any way, but I will do the...

    G4 MDD Freenas

I figured I would do some wet sanding and buffing today. The front and top panels are not gloss so they just need a bath. The side panels were in bad shape, however, and needed the works. I figured cool, I will take out the anger by sanding and buffing loads. And it went very well. I was very...

    G4 MDD Freenas

Wasn't in the mood for soldering tonight. I am exhausted tbh. Fastest full case mod I have ever done. Any way, before I made it all permanent I decided to test the hardware. I connected up the board etc PSU, all works perfectly. That was a relief. Fired up the HDD PSU and again no problems...

Thankfully the noise, mess and blood loss seems to have ended now the mods are all done. Thank god. I started on the wiring, and bashed it all out. The GT 640 is just there to hold the socket down whilst the epoxy sets. However I can pretty much put whatever I like in there now. FP is all...

Drilling chopping and etc is over. Thank god. Closes up nice. Just need two PCI slot covers. Next up, soldering.

OK so I have received and fitted the latching switch for the HDD PSU. And inside. I was going to put that here. Then realised it was metal. Chromed metal, and I don't have a 12mm drill bit. I don't think I would risk that either, risking the chrome finish and most certainly the plastics...

Made the IO yesterday So I am literally waiting on 2.8mm drill bits and two kettle leads.

Drive bays are now fully attached. They screw in through the back side. PSUs are fitted perma now. Speaker has been rewired and put back in. It's a wee bit skew whiff but it's all very solid. I cut my thumb open and it wouldn't stop bleeding so I had to work with a paper towel taped over my...

    G4 MDD Front Panel Pinout

I tried to probe it but it started to annoy me. Ideally I could have done with some clips for my probes haha.

    G4 MDD Front Panel Pinout

Might be a little too late, but the way I did it was to remove the chip and crystal and just solder the wires onto the back of the button itself. Same with the LED.

    Radiomactive. A mod from 2004.

Yeah, I really did it that long ago. Note, these were the days of Lanparty boards and gawd knows what else, so she's a bit bright. I figured I would post it for historical reasons. It could have well been the first G3 modded ever, IDK. I was inspired by The Rotten Apple (the first QS mod I ever...

OK. So does it all fit?. Not the PSU side, but the other side of things. Apologies for the potato pic, but let's cover the fan first. Yup, that fits OK. It even works. How embarrassed would I have been if the fan I have not used since the Titan Black days didn't work. It's a little off...

    G4 MDD Freenas

Yeah sorry about that I forgot to list info. It's the 7010 SFF. I got mine from a charity for autistic kids (recycled) and it cost me £45 with no drives in. I posted the wrong pic earlier. It wasn't how Google said it would be inside either. The board *should* have looked like this...

    G4 MDD Freenas

Thank you sar ! It's a bit sad that these MDD are literally going in skips because they are very hard to mod into a Hackintosh. I priced up four bay NAS and yeah.. Let's not go there. I reckon that this NAS, fully running (without drives of course but none come with them) should run me about...

    G4 MDD Freenas

Forgot a step. I got that Delta PSU (the secondary one) for £9 on Ebay. Delivered. When it came I dismantled it, removed every wire from the PCB that I did not need and soldered in one Molex. The reason is simple, I will be using this thing. This was the PSU after the work was done. Most...

Metal work is done. The fan did fit, but it was a press fit which I wasn't happy about (hence the relief in the rear wall) I can fit the board posts now. Will do that later.

I know many don't use this case for much given it's a sod but I decided to use it for my FreeNAS. It only cost me £30 complete. Took it all apart. Bought a donor. Things needed for the modding. Extra PSU (one for the board etc and the other for the drives) I am going to "remote...
