New Apple Silicon Macs: MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac Mini

Disaster for anyone holding inventory, specifically of versions that just got the Apple Chip treatment. I think there are going to be some mega sales on early 2020 Intel MacBookAir's for instance. If I owned a relatively recent Intel Mac, I'd be fire-saleing it ASAP and getting value while I...

New Apple Silicon Macs: MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac Mini

This is frankly just so cool and so mind-blowing.. I will absolutely be moving to an Apple Silicon Mac sometime in the next year. What I can't decide now is what to do with my existing build. I think I might just sell the whole thing (or part it out) and build a new gaming machine at some...

New Apple Silicon Macs: MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac Mini

We may have a few years to go for sure… But for me at least, it is going to be hard to stay on a hack much past 2021. The envy of all the performance that I’m going to be seeing getting touted will be a lot to handle. I have a feeling our minds are all going to be changing quickly once we ever...

New Apple Silicon Macs: MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac Mini

With this kind of performance the simple desirability of Hackintosh is going to go out the window... I’ll be onboard next year at some point I think

Apple Previews macOS 11.0 Big Sur - Available Fall 2020

It's all very subjective. Also...Office is by no means an "irrelevant corpse" For Solidworks, aren't you best served by a dedicated Windows build anyways? There is really no point in arguing about any of this. Apple is moving on and people will have to adjust (or not) - they don't care about...

Apple Previews macOS 11.0 Big Sur - Available Fall 2020

How do you know? Also, what is your definition of "long time"? Here on the outside, we have no idea what they've cooked up inside the Apple labs. I expect to be surprised.

Throwing down the sensible take.. Spot on - all of it. Enjoy the Hacks while you can folks - it's a dead man walking

Apple Previews macOS 11.0 Big Sur - Available Fall 2020

No it isn't - not to the main mass of the Apple user base. It's completely and totally niche usage at this point. It may be something we here enjoy, but I don't know a single other person that uses it anymore (across maybe 100 people at 3 offices). Once Office got really good on macOS, they...

Apple Previews macOS 11.0 Big Sur - Available Fall 2020

And maybe Apple will show us one that's just flat out faster/better - period I'm trying to stay positive here. This might be better than we think! (not for Hacks - but honestly - this has always been a hobby with a chance of having the rug pulled - we all knew that going in)

Apple Previews macOS 11.0 Big Sur - Available Fall 2020

Nothing in the lineup since the mid 2000's was on a different architecture. That's the wildcard here and I would expect much shorter support and update lifespans as a result. Whether it's disk drives, headphone jacks, USB ports -- you name it -- Once Apple gets its mind going in a new...

Apple Previews macOS 11.0 Big Sur - Available Fall 2020

Expect to be surprised. Apple has shown itself to be somewhat poor in a lot of areas but the silicon team is not one of them. They have consistently been surprising and exceeding expectations for years now

Apple Previews macOS 11.0 Big Sur - Available Fall 2020

Related to this… I hope everybody realizes that the ability to have Boot Camp and running Windows on Mac hardware was simply a happy accident of switching to Intel and never a goal of Apple at all. They simply don’t care about that support or compatibility and I would expect it to be gone...

Apple Previews macOS 11.0 Big Sur - Available Fall 2020

Keep in mind that we have no idea what they have been working on behind the scenes and they have consistently exceeded expectations with their in-house chip work so far. Also they would not be doing this transition if they couldn’t do it for their entire product line up...I’m fairly positive...

Apple Previews macOS 11.0 Big Sur - Available Fall 2020

Personally I’m looking at this from a desirability standpoint. Apple Silicon is going to bring some really cool features that are going to be desirable and not replicatable on an Intel hack. I am totally stoked to be able to run iPad apps natively on a Mac. And honestly the whole AMD gpu thing...

How is it misleading to state my opinion that “I would return it”? I’m not making a factual statement… I’m simply weighing in with my opinion

Apple Previews macOS 11.0 Big Sur - Available Fall 2020

For me, this signals an end to Hacking in short order... I suspect Apple hardware is going to be excellent and it will be very desirable and/or compelling to be on it. I’d been holding up on updates and I’m glad I did. I plan to swap back to NVIDIA and make my existing hardware a full time...

I am very curious to see if that driver board will correctly handle the P3 color space and brightness differences. I certainly hope so. That would be very promising if so

5k Resolution with original iMac Panel and Nvidia Card

I've decided to live with an extra 24" 1920 x 1200 Asus monitor I have here for now. Not a clear gorgeous picture, but functional for now -- I feel like I should let this situation breathe a bit and decide on next steps with no rush or timeline pressure.

@macnexus So what's your plan for mounting/enclosure on the DIY iMac panel route? You going to get an iMac shell?
