While this is not always the most desirable situation (having to use the USB stick to boot), it has an advantage. Cloning the HD is very easy because there is no bootloader or other partitions to worry about. I did this before my 10.11.4 update and it was easier than in the past where I had to...
Stucked on Gigabyte logo screen (Serious Problem)
Sounds like a BIOS corruption issue. I would try to remove the CMOS battery from the board, replacing it after a minute, and allowing the BIOS to reset itself to fail safe settings. If this works you'll get past the Gigabyte logo and will just...
Is this the GBU521? If so, unfortunately I can't help you, but I will say this. I installed El Capitan with a GBU421 in my hack. I had the 521 lying around so I decided to swap them out. Seemed to work fine, but the 521 would not allow me to type in my password after wake from sleep. (If I used...
Could be hardware-related. One way to tell is to boot up the computer from a Linux distro and shut down to see how that goes.
I have two hacks that will not boot directly from the HD. I have to use the bootable USB El Capitan install disk to boot from Clover, but my computers shut down properly.
Whoa! That's one big fan. My build on this board is running 100% great right now, but if I need to I'll try your method. I'm running Asus 8400gs silent graphics (the tonymac recommended fully-compatible one). My needs are very basic.
Very nicely written! I've got the exact same board & revision. One question: why iBoot Legacy?
I enabled audio using voodoohda, but your method seems cleaner. If you can, post a link to where someone can purchase the exact same video card, in case they want to duplicate your build. Thanks.
Long shot, but on my build, I had to boot with PCIRootUID=1 in my com.Apple.boot.plist. You might be able to specify it at boot time as well.
Here's some more info on this flag:

Thanks. I also have those same settings. I disabled the serial and parallel ports also. I am on BIOS FI (the latest).
The only other things I can think of are that I left my PCI NIC card in a PCI slot and disabled it. (I left it in because it was difficult to remove, SL detected it, but was...
Just to let everyone know my sad, truly sad story (cue up the violins!).
I've had real troubles with my ES2L Snow Leopard builds. I finally did manage to get everything working and updated to 10.6.6, then kernel panics started happening (I'm talking once an hour). I couldn't really pin it down...
The specific kext I used was from this page: http://www.kexts.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=533. I used Kext Utility to install it. I don't see why Kext Helper would not work though. We both used Multibeast to set up our audio, selecting VoodooHDA 0.2.2.
There is this one: http://code.google.com/p/xnu-sleep-enabler/
As well as sleepenabler kexts I see discussed on here: http://osx86.co/f57/guide-retail-snow-leopard-dvd-install-for-g31m-t3672/page72.html (see posts 713 & 714).
I just cloned my 10.6.6 set up so I might give it a shot.
Yeah, thanks again for your help.
It could be the change in MB version, and it could be just dependent on your graphics card, or even a combination of the two.
I still haven't tried sleep on the computer because I left it on overnight rebuilding my iTunes library. Do you have sleep working on...
Akubichan, got the 10.6.3 DVD and....same thing.
I was pretty sure that wasn't going to be the solution, but I had to try. I went back to my first instinct - that it was something related to running Multibeast. After all, if my graphics were working OOTB just booting up with iBoot, then why...
I finally had to get some real work done so I unhooked things and put my 10.5.8 set up back together. (Just entails re-wiring the hard drives and changing out the graphics card.) I'm going to see if I can get a 10.6.3 retail disk and try again this weekend. I'll report back with hopefully good news.
