    << Solved >> AMD WX4170 dGPU on ZBook G5 17 Laptop

Saw this on the MacRumors '2011 iMac Graphics Card Upgrade' thread (might be relevant since they can also use AMD Radeon Pro WX4170 mobiles:) Is this a problem that happens with our setup?

[Guide] HP ProBook/EliteBook/Zbook using Clover UEFI hotpatch

-----If you weren't already aware, note that Clover actually replaced those parts of its internals which would otherwise be redundant by switching to relying on an included vendored copy of OpenCore as of Clover v5.1 r5124 all the way back on October 12th, 2020. (This also gave it Big Sur and...

My First Hackintosh — [WIP] The Build: HP ZBook 17 G6

Whoops, almost forgot: for documentation's sake, I've now participated in that MacRumors thread as follows: Asked a few questions here. Got a reply here. Replied back here. Got another reply back here. Made another reply here. Got another reply to that one here, from @EdwardGeo. Made another...

My First Hackintosh — [WIP] The Build: HP ZBook 17 G6

I may well want to find someone else to do the actual soldering on this job, though; this level of job may be beyond me…

My First Hackintosh — [WIP] The Build: HP ZBook 17 G6

You must have gotten pretty lucky, then; I contacted that seller again, and they said they won't be getting any 4170s with VBIOS chips in. THANK YOU!!! I don't do much shopping for electronics parts, so I might need some help finding these, but I'll start looking for them. Wow, I can't...

My First Hackintosh — [WIP] The Build: HP ZBook 17 G6

Thank you very much! Edit: Wait, that's the same as the only guy I've seen selling them, and he said he doesn't have any with the VBIOS chip any more, or at least not at the moment, when I asked him recently.

My First Hackintosh — [WIP] The Build: HP ZBook 17 G6

…you wouldn't still happen to have a valid link to the eBay description page for the card you purchased, would you, @theroadw? I'm still not having any luck finding one; only one seller I've noticed has only the VBIOS-less ones.

@jonto: Did you set Windows to interpret your system time as UTC? Note that:

Who are they? I don't think I've heard of them…

    HP ZBOOK G5 17

Fair enough; I can always spin a (raw-disk?) VM up instead if need be. Let me know if you ever figure that out, though. Forgot to ask: what are some examples of what you find confusing there? (Just curious.)

    HP ZBOOK G5 17

@theroadw: Just curious, but does your setup boot El Capitan, by any chance? That's the OS the old machine I've been trying to move on from is still stuck on; I was going to migrate it over into a spare partition and then start copying things over to Catalina or Big Sur.

My First Hackintosh — [WIP] The Build: HP ZBook 17 G6

Are Radeon Pro WX 4170 and 7100 mobile cards sourced from Dell laptops more likely to still have their EEPROM chips and associated resistor networks than ones sourced from HP laptops? On another note, coming back to this, I don't see any new listings for 4170s with EEPROM chips on eBay or...

My First Hackintosh — [WIP] The Build: HP ZBook 17 G6

I meant another 4170, this time with an EEPROM chip. (Unless, again, something better's come out.) Again, having a configuration with the matte 4K 'DreamColor' display like I do requires a working discrete GPU even just for your machine to pass POST, so I doubt that will work.

My First Hackintosh — [WIP] The Build: HP ZBook 17 G6

Oof. Guess I need to pay more attention to what I'm looking at. (Facepalms. Apparently, I was hallucinating there being a chip in that position… I should've zoomed in on my picture to compensate for my low vision and searched harder for those other pictures to compare with.) Thanks for...

My First Hackintosh — [WIP] The Build: HP ZBook 17 G6

O-kay: after a much-longer-than-intended hiatus, here's what my AMD Radeon Pro WX 4170 mobile graphics card looks like: That matches up with this post in the MacRumors thread you linked before, theroadw. (I can't seem to find that other post there which I remember as having a bunch of...

My First Hackintosh — [WIP] The Build: HP ZBook 17 G6

So I finally got around to working on this again, LOL. I've taken the AMD Radeon Pro WX 4170 mobile GPU out and left the Nvidia Quadro T1000 card my laptop came with in for now; I tested it along with the RAM and drive it also came with, and I know this configuration successfully boots into...

    HP ZBOOK G5 17

hugodlc: Might the card's video BIOS possibly be included in the 'Radeon™ Pro Software for Enterprise on HP Mobile' package whose installer is available for download from AMD here (after clicking to expand the disclosure group relevant to the OS you have installed,) by any chance? (The...

    HP ZBOOK G5 17

hugodlc: You — are — AWESOME!!! This should help me a lot! I have downloaded a copy of the OpenCore configuration you attached and will take a look at it later. (Quick question, though: how can I tell if my WX 4170 is good and has its EEPROM and accompanying resistors?)

My First Hackintosh — [WIP] The Build: HP ZBook 17 G6

No. Actually, I eventually came to the following conclusions: AMD doesn't seem to list a mobile variant of the Radeon Pro WX 7100 on its web site, so I almost wonder if it even exists. Even if this card does exist, I have my doubts that it's usable in the HP ZBook 17, be that a G5 or a G6...

    HP ZBOOK G5 17

Oh, hey, that's neat! I must have overlooked this before. Pity the project doesn't support WiFi 6 (802.11ax) cards like the 'Intel Dual Band Wi-Fi 6 AX200 (2x2) and Bluetooth 5 combo, vPro' I've got on my G6; otherwise, I might use this. I'll probably stick to the Broadcom card I bought...
