HowTo: Real Thunderbolt HotPlug/HotSwap on the fly

Here's a detailed walkthough. I used this to change the CFG Lock setting on my MB originally, but you can use the same approach to edit all of the available bios settings, including Thunderbolt settings...

HowTo: Real Thunderbolt HotPlug/HotSwap on the fly

Ok, I don't have time to mess with all the settings until I have finished a job I'm doing, but I've compared the settings recommended by @Mork_vom_Ork with the configurable AND hidden bios settings available in the Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD5 TH. 'Thunderbolt Force Power' is not available at all, and...

HowTo: Real Thunderbolt HotPlug/HotSwap on the fly

@Mork_vom_Ork Question: If Thunderbolt Force Power is not part of the bios (hidden or otherwise) does that mean the hot plug will not work?

HowTo: Real Thunderbolt HotPlug/HotSwap on the fly

Gigabyte Z170X-UD5 TH seems to have all of the required BIOS settings in the BIOS (F22g), but hidden. I don't have time to deep-dive it right now, but here is the extracted BIOS section converted to txt. Search for the OP's bios settings and you'll find them. The right hex settings will need to...

HowTo: Real Thunderbolt HotPlug/HotSwap on the fly

I can’t wait to see if I can get this to work on Z170x-ud5 TH :) edit: Have tried it. Required BIOS options not present (F22g). SSDT alone is not enough to enable it. I'll try and see if they are hidden options that can be patched with a grub shell (Like the MSR Ex02 patch).

    Asus X299 - Catalina Support

    I have also seen an approx 75% reduction in scores. (GB4 5500/20,000 -> GB5 1111 / 5555) EDIT: New standard reference CPU is i3-8100.

    Security Update 2019-004 - Released July 2019

Are all your USB ports working? If so, no new patch needed. Also, use hackintool to make a usb kext (after narrowing your ports down to 15) and you’ll never need a patch again. It’s worth the time and effort.

    Asus X299 - Catalina Support

Bootloader written from the ground up by the people that made Lilu, VirtualSMC, whatevergreen, etc, with a super clean code base. I installed it this weekend and even at version 0.0.4 it’s solid.

Z170X-UD5 TH High Sierra tips and tricks

That’s only needed if you want to use AptioMemoryFix.efi, and were previously using EmuVariableUefi.efi (or whatever it’s called). The above commands remove the files that store the values read by that driver. I do recommend using AptioMemoryFix as z170x-ud5 TH supports native NVRAM. For more...

    Security Update 2019-004 - Released July 2019

If it worked by just unplugging USB devices, try using hackintool to map your ports, and keep the total number to 15 or lower. This solves many problems, like OS updates and sleep issues.

    Security Update 2019-004 - Released July 2019

Unplug all USB devices except the keyboard/mouse and try it that way... If that doesn't work, do the above as well as disabling iGPU in bios...

    Asus X299 - Catalina Support

Was thinking another thing to try is back up your whole EFI folder to a USB, then try getting rid of anything that isn’t the clover folder in the EFI partition (Apple) but keep Microsoft if you need it...

NVIDIA Releases Alternate Graphics Drivers for macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 (387.10.10.10.40)

I have the same plan. Might snag a used rx580 in the interim to get stable on Mojave before going up to Catalina.

    Asus X299 - Catalina Support

My only thoughts at this point are maybe trying an earlier bios revision and see if the issue still persists? (Removing the duplicate entries first of course) :)

    Asus X299 - Catalina Support

Sure, and I can appreciate all of that, but we don't know what things you already know, and what things you've already tried, so yes, you made have to wade through some noise until you get signal. We're not deliberately trying to be redundant or unhelpful.

NVIDIA Releases Alternate Graphics Drivers for macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 (387.10.10.10.40)

The delay for these drivers is so atypically long (considering NVIDIA releases updates for 10.13 the day after an OS or security update) that most people believe that drivers for 10.14+ will not be coming.
