    Robbish's 8yr old ATX IvyBridge Hackintosh GA-Z77-DS3H - i5-3570K - HD 4000 [OpenCore/macOS Big Sur]

You've got to get yourself a 4k TV. macOS on a "retina" display is the only way to go. If I remember correctly, Apple's 17-inch color CRT from the early 1990s (!!!) had a suggested resolution of 1280x1024 — taller than a 720p TV monitor (in pixels). Time to step up from 30 years ago. You'll...

    Robbish's 8yr old ATX IvyBridge Hackintosh GA-Z77-DS3H - i5-3570K - HD 4000 [OpenCore/macOS Big Sur]

Wow! Thank you Robbish! That was a fantastic writeup. I have similar hardware (Z77-DS3H with 3750K). I'm overclocked to 4.2GHz. I got a Radeon RX 560 when I bought my 4K TV to use as a monitor. I've been using my machine since 2012. Machine is in the living room hooked to my 65-inch dumb...

    Name the Next macOS (11.0)

I always thought that instead of California places, Mountain Lion should have transitioned to Mountain Goat and then on to Goat and boom... a whole set of farm animals!

    Kingston A1000 M.2 2280

Maybe "obb" is short for obsolete? In other news "Intel 660p Series M.2 2280 1TB PCI-Express 3.0 x4" is for sale at NewEgg for $103 today.

Apple Updates MacBook Pros with 8th-Generation Intel CPUs and 32GB RAM

Don't forget to add in the cost (and inconvenience) of 3 or 4 dongles so that you can use industry-standard peripherals!

    erik's "Tiny But Mighty" HTPC: ASRock Z370M-ITX/ac - i5-8400 - UHD 630 Graphics - High Sierra

A built a family member a 7th generation i3 (3.9 GHz) machine with a 4k display. With built in video there was a little lag; noticeable when moving a window around on the screen or other operation requiring a lot of pixels to be drawn. Also, the Displays System Pref by default doesn't give you...

    erik's "Tiny But Mighty" HTPC: ASRock Z370M-ITX/ac - i5-8400 - UHD 630 Graphics - High Sierra

If you're playing 3D games, then the sky is limit for a video card price & heat. But I don't think you're building a gaming rig. I'm driving a 1080p display and find my onboard HD4000 is plenty fast for my modest needs. Also, the newer CPUs are considerably faster than my 5 year old machine...

    erik's "Tiny But Mighty" HTPC: ASRock Z370M-ITX/ac - i5-8400 - UHD 630 Graphics - High Sierra

Nice build! Without the HDD it's probably just about silent. Are there any H370 boards yet? Seems like all the boards I see are Z370. With a Z board, maybe you should have gone with the i3 K version.

Graphic Card suggestion on this build

Good points Gigamaxx. That machine is with my sister now, so I can't check. As for my own machine, it's hooked to a 55-inch flat panel TV, so accurate color—even at 24 bit—is questionable. The newer cards (RX560 and GTX 1050) are amazing though. Fast and silent. The GTX (and probably RX)...

Graphic Card suggestion on this build

I think we're pretty much in agreement. I figured you already had some of that equipment, so it's a no-brainer to just use it. As for getting the audio working ... yeah, it should work perfectly right out of the box exactly as you said. Probably I'm just not following directions correctly. I...

Graphic Card suggestion on this build

I built my sister a box with same motherboard. One plus is that the motherboard has both HDMI 1.4 and DisplayPort built in; this is good to get set up initially before messing with the video card. It also means you can drive your DisplayPort monitor without having to (yet) spend all that money...

    OS X 10.9.3 Update

Article: OS X 10.9.3 Update Ah. Got my stereo system sound. In System Preferences > Sound > Output > Device the setting was reset to merely Digital Out (I guess that's the motherboard optical output). Changed to the HDMI device and all is good. I have HDMI passthrough (5.1 surround from...

    OS X 10.9.3 Update

Article: OS X 10.9.3 Update I have the ds3h also. My audio works from EyeTV in direct HDMI passthrough (5.1 surround sound) but if I switch to basic system stereo I get nothing. That also means that anything like Youtube gives me nothing also.

    Building a CustoMac: Buyer's Guide May 2013

Article: Building a CustoMac: Buyer's Guide May 2013 One thing to keep in mind is that the figure is the total output of the power supply. A 450 W power supply might not be able to supply 300 W to a very high end video card even if the total of other components is less than 100 W. That said...

Unigine Heaven Updated to 4.0 - 3D Graphics Benchmarking for OS X

I'm surprised nobody benched an HD4000 for baseline comparison. Here's my i5 3570k benching 7.5 FPS with a score of 190 at medium quality. At ultra quality I was getting about 4 FPS.

How to pick a Power Supply Unit that matches your hardware

In my (limited) experience trying to find a quiet power supply, I go for units that have a 120mm variable speed fan. I have a 400W unit that rarely draws more than 50W from the wall, so the fan is turning very slowly and so is very quiet. I had to do a bit of twisting and stretching to get the...
