"Mini" form factor Dell/HP/Lenovo systems on Ebay

Why is this touted as such a key factor? I never think about power consumption. My power bill is rather small unless the the HVAC is running. For a laptop that has a battery I get it but for a Desktop it is not really on my Radar.

I have two windows PC that run most always, and two hacks between the 4 about 3200 watts of power supply.

For me, it's more about heat which has a direct correlation to power consumption. Not so much about the power bill. The amount of heat my old equipment threw out was enough to make my apt extremely uncomfortable in summers. It was also enough that I didn't need to turn on the heat in the winters.

Power consumption peaked for me with my old MacPro5,1. Since then, I've made conscious efforts to try and transition to cooler running equipment. I built my NAS around a C2550 because its TDP is only 14W. I also used Raspberry Pis for a lot of stuff because they run cool. Of course, there's also my Mac Studio which is extremely efficient.

This winter was the first time I've had to turn on the heat in my apt in over 20 years. The summer was also much more bearable.

I guess being a AC junkie the heat in the summer was just getting cooled over never thought much about it and my house is large enough that my office door is open to a room with a vaulted ceiling so all the heat just goes away.

Here in NYC, the summers can get pretty brutal with insane humidity at times. Plus, I live in a small studio apt... The reduction in heat generated from my primary desktop computer is definitely noticeable. Last summer, I didn't have to work my A/C as hard as I've had to in the past and we experienced record setting heat.

Yea I do not dig humidity and heat but I prefer it to dry heat at least the kind of humidity in CA. When I was in PR a few years back it was seriously humid and I was not digging it at all. Picked up a MacBook Pro M2 Max today so far I have not been able to kill it with a file that killed my 6900xt and 64gig of memory.

What kind of file is that?? Lol

The M2 Max must be awesome. I'm going to try and wait for 3mn and Armv9 before upgrading...

Something else that appealed to me was that you can swap out the display adapter!. USB-C too, well you have a few choices!, can it run a thunderbolt display from USB-C?.

Careful Greta doesn't respond to this, and remove those pizza box's too!. I believe we all should all do what we can to reduce climate stress, no matter how small effect we individually think we have. NY in the summer is brutal, an efficient chip such as i7 7700T makes a difference.

It is a Twin Motion file, I use Twin Motion for Rendering Homes, I had added a bunch of stuff to it like cats running in the yard.. Birds flying, wind blowing some rain and snow. Just different effects, twin motion is based on Unreal Engine just more of a dumbed down version. Unless I missed something and they made an ARM version it is running in rosetta... I think that this example will push any GPU to 100% so I was not surprised by that but the fact that I was using almost 64gigs of memory vs only 19 was what truly surprised me.

Edit:

Something I had not planned on doing I decided to try and that was run windows on ARM and then install Revit (drafting software). While it made the Mac page 290megs it still kept the physical memory below 20GB. This paging could be caused by windows itself as windows likes to have a page file. This was not the result I got with the Hack.

I couldn't care less what Greta has to say and I do my part by designing energy efficient homes that are LEED certified. I have not thought much about it lately but when I had a Mac Pro Trash Can I had a 6" ---> 4" plumbing reducer on the top connected to duct work to vent it outside...

Honestly they could resurrect that design with the new SOC, and while some people really want a Cube the trashcan from an ascetics stand point was the best no one really ever knew what it was.

You can always find out whether it's an Intel app or Universal by right-clicking the app and selecting Get Info.

Yeah, I really don't know how the paging works. There has been times I've seen paging with over 20GB free RAM. I suspect that it may be due to GPU using RAM because I usually see it happen after playing games.

It is launched from the Epic Games Launcher and I am not really sure where it resides on the computer to info it. One of the reasons I took so long to get a AS system was the lack of a native Twin Motion.
