Gigabyte Z490 Vision D (Thunderbolt 3) + i5-10400 + AMD RX 580

I was upgrading from Big Sur. Vision G BIOS is F6.

The upgrade completed and the system runs, but crashes all the time after logging in for normal use.
Some questions / suggestions:
  • Are you using on-board Intel WiFi/BT or a Broadcom module?
  • Does it make a difference if Ethernet cable is connected or not connected?
  • Which version of OpenCore?
  • Are all applications updated to latest versions?
  • If nothing helps, one quick test is to install a fresh copy of Ventura on a spare SSD. I typically use SATA SSDs mounted in external USB 3 enclosures for these types of experiments. If the fresh installation works reliably, then the finger points to some carryover ‘baggage’ from the Big Sur upgrade.

Thanks for the tips. I created a new EFI with HackingDrom and installed from scratch. Now it is stable.

Only the Ethernet doesn't go, despite it showing up as a device as mentioned in the article at the start of this thread...

Unfortunately the files to re-flash the chip have all disappeared online, does anyone still have them around?
Thanks.

The best/most stable BIOS for Z490 Vision G is Version F20 :-

Instructions for i225 Vmod (use option 2) :-

I've attached my backup of the i225 vmod files below as the original link on IM is down.

F21 is probably best avoided. No option to downgrade once it's updated. It's primarily patching security vulnerabilities. No idea how that affects running macOS on a Z490 VG.

Here's what Gigabyte says about F21...
  • Introduce capsule BIOS support starting this version.
Customers will NOT be able to revert to previous BIOS version due to major vulnerabilities concerns.
If anyone has flashed F21 I'd be interested to hear about the experience with it.

What's "capsule BIOS support"?

What's "capsule BIOS support"?
Complicated to explain.

Simple version:
It's a new(er) way of deploying firmware. With the shift to it, you cannot revert to the 'old' way of deploying, so you cannot downgrade.

More complex explanation:

@trs96,

Yep I completely agree with you on this, thats why i recommended F20 in my post.

For me F20 is stable and pretty complete. I do seem to remember reading a few posts a year or so ago, where one or two users encountered issues with F21 (i think it may have been to do with PCIe dGPU but don't quote me on that), I seem to remember that they tried to downgrade to F20 but no dice due to the new format of F21+.

Since then I've avoided going any higher than F20.

All that said I'm sure there are systems out there running F21 without issues but I'm sticking F20 for now.

Cheers
Jay

Thanks @jaymonkey, I was able to get it going.

I have also added a BCM94360CS2 card. The card is detected but it does not find any networks. Is there any trick that is missing to make it work on the Vision G?

Not sure if I need to set the country code or anything else...

Thanks for your help.

Hi Jay,

Am I likely to experience any problems upgrading from F6 to F20?

Are there any new features that are worth enabling?

Thanks
