ASUS X299 Monterey/Ventura Support

Jumping in here

WD SN750 has history of being golden based on direct experience and community reports

WD SN850 should be good too if you need PCIe 4, but I personally haven't tried it.

I just got a SK Hynix Platinum P41 (PCIe 4) and it is has been running super smooth on Asus z590 11th gen, Monterey 12.5.x.

Ther've been reports of serious probs with macOS on previous version SK Hynix Gold P31. I have also seen a report that a firmware update eliminated the prob. But idk. Ive seen none of that for P41. I've been daily driving P41 for last 3 weeks. Cloned it from a 980 Pro which went fast and flawlessly, it boots fastest ever, benches super high, and everything feels perfect. Not a hiccup so far. I don't use NVMeFix nor SetApfsTrimTimeout with this drive.

By comparison 980 Pro was a headache, with one having media errors and the replacement going Trim-wonky after latest Samsung firmware update.

But, however much I am pleased with SKHynix P41, I will contradict myself and say that based on my studies of reviews and known goodness for SN750, I suspect (but cannot demonstrate) that the WD SN850 is the best overall performing hack drive. So I judge it as the safest bet overall.

...Until it isn't... <grin>

Of course there are reported fine experiences with other more generic makes. Others will tell.

I say avoid both Samsung and Sabrent due to personally suffering awful pitfalls with both.
we will bet on him WD SN850

we will bet on him WD SN850
I use the WD SN750 2TB NVMe and it works (using Monterey v12.5). BUT when I'm trying to start from another SSD (like I did when trying to boot into Ventura beta using my Samsung 850 EVO SSD), I have to open my case and take out (each and every time), my WD SN750 before I start my system, in order for the other SSD to boot.

Now if I have the same 850, 860, 870 EVO SSD using the same Monterey v12.5 OS, then I can boot into any of them, even WITH the WD SN750. It's weird that it works doing it that way, but can't if I'm booting from another SSD into Ventura beta while the WD SN750 drive in in the system. Can't figure that out?

Aside from that, it is a good drive. Hope this helps.

Sorry to bother you. One question: in the Sage 10G GC Titan Ridge with flashed fw does it only work in slot 2? Is there any evidence that it can work on other slots as well? Thanks in advance.

I've tried moving it around and found that it worked best in slot 2. My guess is because slot 2 is tied to the PCH when thunderbolt settings are enabled in the BIOS and the other slots are all on plx chips. If you're okay with just coldboot and no hot plug other slots might work? It's been a while since I messed with it or tried multiple cards at once

So, I downgraded from my WS X299 Sage to a X299-A (kinda in preparation for retiring my hackintosh at some point in the next year or so), and I'm wondering if there's a base EFI for an X299-A that someone has available…

Anyone?

Just need to map USB ports but there are some pre-defined usb kexts in kgp's old github. Just may need to edit for MacPro7,1 SMBIOS

I just tried installing Monterey to see if it fixes a monitor problem I posted here. The install seemed to be going well until the final boot from the HDD, where it gets stuck here. Do you have any thoughts on this?

One quick thing to try is:
  • Config.plist --> Misc --> Security --> SecureBootModel --> Default
If that doesn't help, then:
  • Config.plist --> Misc --> Security --> SecureBootModel --> Disabled
